Biology Department

The Biology Department at Pinelands High School has established a reputation for itself as being one of the best over a long period of time. They were among the first to establish and run practical examinations in the Cape and have been in the forefront of organising field trips as well as the school's own Science Fair. There has been a long tradition of employing soundly qualified and experienced laboratory assistants who have helped maintain a high standard of practical work.

The Department has been fortunate over the years to have kept the services of well qualified teachers who have all made substantial contributions to developing the teaching of Biology at the school. Continuous assessment has been successfully implemented and is being constantly reviewed and improved. The current challenge facing the Department is to develop those aspects of Biology which contribute most to Outcomes Based Education, while at the same time maintaining a high standard in preparing learners for their school-leaving examinations. In this regard the Department has been highly successful. Many of our past pupils have gone on to study in Biological fields after school having developed their love of the subject while at school.

Mission Statement

It is important to us that our learners:

 

Are able to make informed decisions on biological issues in a democratic society
Are able to understand the working of their own bodies and care for their own health as independent adults
Are exposed to a broad range of biological fields in order to help them choose suitable study courses or careers after school
Are thoroughly prepared for whatever form of evaluation is externally applied so that they may achieve the highest possible performance for their school-leaving qualification
Acquire the basic skills required for further work or study in the natural science in South Africa or internationally
Acquire a love and concern for a healthy sustainable environment.
