Mission:

Our mission is to motivate staff, learners, parents and guardians to recycle materials they would normally discard. This serves both for purposes of fund-raising, and for sharing in the education of our school community about sustainable use of the earth's fragile and limited resources. We devise cost-effective systems and strategies to collect, store and market materials for recycling to maximise financial and educational goals to the best effect for the school.

Current Programme

We collect clean mixed paper and cardboard throughout the year (See display below for further detail)
We run quarterly inter-class paper drive competitions
Dates for 1999:
Monday 1 to Saturday 6 February
Monday 3 to Saturday 8 May
Monday 2 to Saturday 7 August
Monday 25 to Saturday 30 October

We collect cleaned food and beverage cans throughout the year

We collect clean glass containers of all kinds throughout the year
All of these materials may be delivered by members of the public at any time. Enter through the back entrance to the school (between Garden City Heights and the Pinelands Club). The Recycling Depot is between the Technology block and the garages next to the outdoor basketball courts.

What we are needing from you:

Newspapers and magazines
Phone directories and office waste
Computer paper
Old text and exercise books
Old paperbacks
Cardboard
Office waste paper and envelopes
In fact any clean paper!

Corporate effort is needed - every bit helps if        everyone does their bit! We are very easy to find!

Development Programme

We plan to develop our programme further as resources become available to sort our recycled materials further so as to market them for higher prices. In order to further this objective we are currently advertising the following vacancy:

RECYCLING MANAGER : PINELANDS HIGH SCHOOL

The successful applicant for this post will be responsible for managing the Recycling Project at the school, both for purposes of fund-raising, and for sharing in the education of its members about sustainable use of the earth’s fragile and limited resources.

Such a person would be responsible for motivating the staff, learners, parents and guardians to recycle materials they would normally discard. S/he would devise cost-effective systems and strategies to collect, store and market materials for recycling to maximise financial and educational goals to the best effect for the school. The position will require commitment, ability to work with members of the school community and the business concerns involved, and sustained effort to improve and upgrade the recycling programme.

It is envisaged that the position will be a part-time one for a person who is not solely dependent on this job as a source of income. The position would be suitable for a member of the local community who lives relatively near to the school and who would have the best interests of the school at heart. The financial remuneration, as well as the expectations for the position, will be negotiable and will take into account the service nature of the project.

Applications should be directed to The Deputy Principal, Pinelands High School, Forest Drive, Pinelands 7405. Telephone 531-7410. Fax 531-7415. E-mail [email protected]

We are also currently in need of a parent, guardian, past pupil or friend of the school who would be willing to deliver a load of cans to Collect-a-Can in Epping once a month.

Last year we raised in excess of

R7 300!!

which was used to upgrade cloakroom facilities faster than would have occurred otherwise and the Matrics were able to raise a considerable sum to offset the cost of their Matric Dance.

This year funds will be used to furnish our school playgrounds with many more durable and attractive benches and garbage bins at a much faster rate than would otherwise be possible. Funds raised by the Matrics in the first two terms will again go towards their Matric Dance

We strive to be a world-class school, rooted in Africa, that facilitates a quality, all-round education in a caring and disciplined environment.
