In addition we have pupils having instrumental lessons with several teachers in the Pinelands area and at the two Music Centres, while still doing the written component at school.

 

Unfortunately Mr Coote will be retiring at the end of April and we are looking for a replacement for him at the moment. We are also planning to employ a strings teacher this year in order to fill a gap in the instruments on offer here at PHS.

 

We have a thriving Jazz Ensemble, Wind Orchestra, Choir and two Marimba groups, all of whom perform regularly all over the Peninsula. These are all organised by music staff, but have learner committees who are involved in the running of the groups. In addition to these, learners are responsible for the running and rehearsing of the Cabaret group

This group had a very successful run at the beginning of March: they had café type evenings and the music they sang all came from the movies this time.

 

Also music-related but run by one of our Xhosa teachers is the African Sounds Group – they all specialise in African dance and singing.

 

Keyboard lab: The music department is very privileged to have a keyboard lab consisting of 11 Yamaha keyboards. The teacher can control and listen to all the keyboards and teach via microphone and headphones. They are also used in harmony and composition classes. The keyboards are used extensively with our Grade 8 Stream II learners who have chosen music as one of their subject choices in Grade 8 and who come to us as total beginners. By the time their course is finished they can all read music with varying degrees of fluency, have knowledge and basic skills on playing the keyboard and have a general understanding of music history. Music students who some into the Grade 8 Stream I course all have learnt an instrument in primary school and have some degree of skill on that instrument already.

 

There are a number of compelling reasons why learning an instrument or studying music are of importance to today’s kids: it teaches self-confidence, self-discipline, concentration, learners learn to work in groups, but most of all it provides cultural, emotional and spiritual development.
