I had already read Emma by the time Clueless came out, and I was dying to see how it compared. Okay, I was actually a little disappointed after seeing it (I'd already seen the funniest parts on the previews anyway) but it is definitely a cute happy little movie, and I had a lot of fun as I was watching it trying to decide the similarities between the two.

The plot (for those Clueless people who haven't seen it) revolves around rich pretty Cher Horowitz, who decides, along with her friend Dionne, to makeover a "clueless" new girl at school called Tai. Cher falls for Christian, who turns out to be gay, and eventually finds happiness with Josh (one of those guys so nerdy/serious it's cute).

The outfits worn by Cher and Dionne could probably make a movie just by themselves. They were colorful, preppy and very, very cute. My favorite accessory in the movie was definitely the fluffy/feathery pen.

The script (adapted from Jane Austen by director Amy Heckerling) is funny and sweet, even if the slang is a little over the top- Cher can't go five minutes without exclaiming "As if!". (The guy who played Murray said he sometimes didn't even understand the script and had to ask the director for help on words like "postal". whatever.)

Check out this amazing detailed essay that compares Emma and Clueless. This is Cher's official site by Paramount. And here's a copy of the entire script.
