Persuasion

Persuausion is the story of Anne Elliot, the daughter of a spendthrift baronet. In her youth, she fell in love with a young sailor, but didn’t marry him because she was persuaded by her family and friends not to. However, she has never stopped loving him, and the book starts when Captain Wentworth comes back into her life again. Meanwhile, her father’s rebellious heir has "repented" and shows a lot of attention to Anne… who will she choose???

Persuasion (another production by the BBC, who untiringly make good and not-so- good Jane Austen adaptions) is a pretty good movie translation of the book, except for a few things. *ahem* They had some terrible piano music (horribly dismal rippling scales), but the only really bad part though was the end, where they deviated waaay too much from the book. They added some things from last chapter that JA later rewrote. The two new chapters she wrote in its place were much much better, so I can’t think why they would use a scene from the canceled one.

There were definitely some funny moments, (Persuasion really is one of JA’s funnier books, and her humor usually transfers well to the movies.) Anne’s sister Mary was incredibly funny, as was the terrific scene where everyone complains to Anne. Mary’s other sister Elizabeth was also very well portrayed, I couldn’t stand her at all! In fact, all the supporting characters (except for Mrs. Smith, ick) did a great job, and seemed better cast then the leads, IMHO. Captain Wentworth was not a bit good looking and very stiff, he totally overplayed the part where he acts all huffy at the concert, and Anne looked a little too old for the part. But, on the whole, I think it was pretty entertaining, and would recommend watching it!
