Marianne and Elinor Dashwood’s father dies at the very beginning of the book, leaving them penniless- because their stepbrother inherits all their father's fortune. Luckily, a distant relative offers to let them, their younger sister, and their mother stay rent-free at a cottage near his house. Before they leave, Elinor meets Edward, her brother-in-law, and falls in love with him. Elinor and Edward share the same reserved, principled character.
After they move into their new home, they meet their charming neighbor, Willoughby, whose fun-loving
nature immediatly captivates Marianne. Marianne takes no pains to disguise her regard for him, which
causes emabrassment later on... Elinor finds out Edward became engaged when he was very young, but
feels that he had to do the right thing and honor his commitment, even though he now loves Elinor. Then,
to make it even worse, Marianne becomes very ill... You have to read Sense and Sensibility to find out
how the problem is solved!
