Thoughts on our visit to the Inter-American Development Bank

Before visiting the Inter-American Development Bank I had no idea that it even existed. I had heard of the World Bank, but not of such a bank dedicated only to development in Latin America. I found the visit to be both informative and interesting.

I was impressed with the volume of money the bank lends and the variety of projects it supports. I was pleased to learn that the bank tries to support projects that will improve the lives of the general population and not ones that would only benefit particular private interests. Learning about how the bank made its decisions was also very interesting. I have not had many interactions with the private sector, nor have I studied it very much, so the processes with the bank used were all new to me. The fact that bank maintains offices in each of its member states to help provide information about that nation and facilitate interactions between the bank and loan seeking groups from that nation, or with the government of the nation itself seemed logical to me, but I would not have produced it myself.

I was also interested to learn that Israel, Japan, the Scandinavian nations, and Germany are among the bank's members. It would make sense to me that Spain, Portugal, and the United Kingdom be involved in the activities of the bank, simply because they have had a historical role in the region, but the reasons for the involvement of the other nations came as more of a surprise to me. However, after giving the subject some thought, it made sense that these other nations would be members of the bank because they are producers of machinery and other products and services developing nations need. The bank is a natural way for these nations, who would otherwise not be involved in the region to make a favorable impression on potential customers.

The work of the translators at the bank was interesting, but I was somewhat disappointed to hear that they have so much work to do they can not work in teams or in other ways which would facilitate better translation. I did think that it was a great idea that the bank put out its own glossary of terminology and made use of the dictionaries published by the World Bank and the United Nations. However, in general I thought that the work of the translators at the bank would be very boring. All day long they write and work but never produce anything of their own. I would prefer to use my translation skills in the context of some other activity, teaching for example, which is my chosen profession.

Antés de visitar el Banco Interamericano de Desarrollo no tenía ningua idea que exixte. Conocía el Banco Mundial, pero no conocía un banco dedicada exclusivamente al desarrollo de la América Latina. A mi la visita fue informativa y interesante.

Me impresionó la cantidad de fondos que presta el banco y la variedad de proyectos que apoya. Me gustó aprender que el banco trata de apoyar proyectos que mayorarán la vida de la gente en general y no solo los que aprovecharían los intereses privados. Apreder de como funcciona el banco y como viene a acordar también me interesó. No había tenido interés en el sector privado, ni lo había estudiado tanto, por eso me encontraron todos los processos que untiliza el banco por primera vez durante la visita. El detalle que el banco mantiene oficinas en cada uno de sus países miembros para ayudar a provenir información sobre la propia nación y para facilitar interacciones entre el banco y los grupos de la nación que piden préstamos, o con el gobierno de la nación me pareció logico, pero no lo hubiera formulado solo.

Me interesé se puede encontrar Isreal, Japón, los países escandanavos, y Alemania entre los miembros del banco. Tendría razón que España, Portugal, y la Reina Unida invuelvan en los actividades del banco, simplemente porque han tenido una posición histórico en la región, pero me soprendió encontrar las razones de involverse de estes otros país. Aún, después de pensar en este asunto, realizé que tiene razón que estes países serían miembros del banco porque producen maquinas y otros bienes y servicios que necesitan países desarrollandos. El banco es un curso natural para estas naciónes, que por otro curso no podría invoverse en la región para imponerse en el mercado.

El trabajo de los traductores del banco me interesó, pero me desfraudó aprender que ellos tienen tan trabajo que no pueden en parejas ni pueden utilizar otros cursos que facilitaría la traducción mejor. Pienso que es muy buena idea que el banco escribe su propio gloseria de temario y uniliza los diccionarios del Banco Mundial y las Naciones Unidas. Pero, en general pensé que el trabajo de los traductores del banco me aburriría mucho. A través de todo el día trabajan y nunco producen nada de sus mismos. Preferiría utilizar mis habilidades de traducer en contexto de otra actividad, la enseñanza por ejémplo, mi carrera seleccionada.
