Generalizations help people discuss interesting differences. But, are generalizations always true without exception? In this lesson we explore various phrases that are used when generalizing and making exceptions. We will also look at ways of applying these phrases by using them in discussions.
We often make generalizations about a certain category of items.
We need to be careful when making generalizations about people,
especially if they seem negative. However, it is very common to make generalizations and exceptions about all kinds of topics.
What phrases can be used to begin a generalization?
Suggested phrases: In general, / Generally speaking, / As a rule, / By and large There are exceptions of course. / One exception is.../ But what about... / Let's not forget... Directions: In groups of two students, have a discussion about each of the items given below. In your discussion make as many generalizations and exceptions as possible. List A List B List C 1.
