In this lesson the student will practice describing things that are happening around him/her. One way to begin this lesson is to present the following hypothetical situation to the class.
One day your boss tells you that the company is recieving a foreign guest. It is your job to entertain the guest by showing him around your city. A simple task, you think to yourself, until you find out the foreign guest speaks only English. Knowing how to describe your surroundings is an important task to master in English.
Questions that you are likely to encounter: 1. What's that? 2. What is that man doing? 3. What is this called? 4. What are those children doing?
Directions:
1. Using the picture provided below, try to name as many nouns as
possible; write the words on paper.
2. Working with your partner, take turns trying to name as many as
possible without looking at your list of words.
3. Check which ones you could not remember.
4. Next, describe to your partner the different activities going on
in the picture.
5. Think about city life in your country and discuss the following.
A. What else might happen in the street?
B. How is the street in the picture different from and similar
to ones in your country?
