I, like many other ESL instructors, became involved in the field through a volunteer program. This was a great experience for me, and I cannot recommend it highly enough. Volunteering will provide you with invaluable classroom experience. It will also help you decide if you really want to pursue this field as a career. Most of all, you will meet wonderful people from all over the world. | |||||||||
| Where can I volunteer my talents in my community? | ||||||||||
| Most cities and larger towns in the US have growing numbers of immigrant populations. Check with your local public school districts to see if they an ESL program. Also check with local universities and community colleges. Any charitable organizations are also good places to look. Check with local religious organizations to see if the sponsor immigrants or run refugee assisstance services. | |||||||||
| What requirements do I need to meet in order to volunteer? | ||||||||||
| The criteria required for volunteering will vary from city to city, as well as from organization to organization. Some will require that you have have graduated from high school, even college. Most will only ask that you be dedicated and reliable. The most important qualities are a sense of respect for your students, and patience. | |||||||||
