This a person who died because of the effects of a mustard gas burn.

Mustard gas (yperite) was the most lethal of all the chemical weapons used during WWI. Though it was odorless and it could take up to twelve hours before it took effect, it eventually caused skin to become blistered, blindness, internal bleeding, and external bleeding. It also attacked the bronchial tubes, causing the mucous membrane to be stripped off. This was so painful that most soldiers had to be strapped to their beds, and it could take up to four or five weeks before the agent had run it's course and the soldier would die.

These are British soldiers that were blinded by mustard gas.
