We Are Not Worthy

A big surprise for Hampshire Mariner's secretary, Dave Rowlings, in work this week! He found out that a colleague had actually played on the hallowed turf.
Gavin Salmon recently joined the company from Shellhaven - whilst living there he played for Basildon Utd in the Essex Senior League.
In 1997 the side went to the north east for their pre-season tour and played a
South Shields XI in a 3 - 1 defeat at Filtrona Park.

We are not worthy!

What do you know, no sooner had Gavin came clean than another hallowed turf treader owns up!
It turns out that Brian Saxon, the Ondeo/Nalco man has also played at Filtrona Park. Brian was born and brought up within the South Shields environs but now lives and works down south. When he is not managing / coaching / painting the fences etc of  local side Sway in his spare time he struggles in to work.
He played for Westoe Mine Workers versus White Leas Celtic in a friendly on Easter Sunday 1985/86. They managed to get the pitch because one of the players, Dennis Minns worked at the ground. Also in the team that day were Allen Dunmore, Ronnie Nichols (man of the match), Stan Glenville, Reg Dunmore, Norman Dunne, Howard Linklaker, Brian Saxon, and Ray White & Geordie Betts - who scored the goals.
Although a good bit older than their opponents Westoe managed to take the game 5 - 0. Brian was the demon of the left wing and although he didn't score he reckons he laid on seven.

This could turn out to be a bit of a select club! Any more closet members out there - to come-out?

Did you see?

In No65 December 1999 edition of Northern Ventures Northern Gains an article entitled; SWEET CAROLINE.

Perhaps in the hope that it will bring the club a rather happier new year, the Hampshire Branch of the South Shields supporters' association has produced its own callender - "tasteful," says branch secretary Dave Rowlings, "as you would expect".
..The Calender, says Shields exile Dave, features bonny lasses in Mariner' shirts - a case, of course, of getting your kit on for the lads. He was the photographer, too - "a thankless task, I know, but someone had to do it."
..Our girl of the month picture shows a decidedly sweet young lady called Caroline, daughter of one of the branch members.
..The Hants branch continues to organise trips to South Shields matches and to send donations to the club. They recently bought new goal nets as well, but it's the calender that master Mariners will really want to hang.
