Sammy's & Sapphire's Diet

This is the diet Sammy and Sapphire eat. There are slight variations to cater to their likes and dislikes, and there is more protein in Sapphire's diet due to her younger age. Sammy and Sapphire both eat three course meals every day but when Marie is gone all day she just gives them everything in the morning and they eventually clean their plates off by dusk.

In the morning, first course. Pick FOUR or more of the following, and finely chop or shred. Always rotate for variety, do not use the same four items over and over. Feed these veggies about 30% of total diet:

  • Yucca root
  • Butternut or Kabocha squash
  • Green or white asparagus
  • Zucchini or Italian squash
  • Dried organic human grade alfalfa leaves (NOT alfalfa sprouts nor alfalfa pellets)
  • Yellow crookneck squash
  • Yellow wax beans or green beans
  • Broccoli stem or flower
  • Yellow, Orange, Red, or Green bell pepper
  • Fresh soybeans

Other items to try that your iguana might like: Carrots, peas, chopped wheat grass, etc.

By noon or 1PM Sammy and Sapphire have devoured their salad and are ready for their second course, which is fed in the afternoon: Large plate of bite size greens. Choose TWO or more of the following and rotate for more variety, do not use the same two greens everyday. Feed greens like this 60-70% of total diet:

  • Collard greens
  • Mustard greens or Texas Mustard greens
  • Kale
  • Turnip greens
  • Arugula
  • Endive
  • Broccoli leaves
  • Escarole
  • Komatsuna
  • Mizuna
  • Moroheya

*NOTE* the last three calcium rich, low phosphorus and low oxalate greens are leaves Marie discovered while in Japan. They are excellent foods for iguanas and can easily be grown in the garden.

Other good choices to try: dandelion, parsley, rapini, chard, bok choy

Final course, fruit for dessert, about 10% of total diet. Feed in early evening after other food items have been eaten, choose ONE of the following:

  • Grapes (all kinds)
  • Apple
  • Strawberries, Blueberries
  • Kiwi
  • RepCal Iguana food

Other good choices: Papaya, Raspberries, Mango
