" The King of Comedy"

Charles Spencer Chaplin born in London England 1889. Died December 25th 1977 Vevey, Switzerland. He died in his sleep of old age. His parents were Charles and Hannah Chaplin. There were 3 known half brothers Sydney Chaplin (same mother , different father) Wheeler Dryden (same mother, different father) unknown ( different mother, same father). Entertainers run through the family, both his parents were hall entertainers. His first stage appearance was at the age of five. He sang a song in place of his mother who became ill. At age eight he toured in a musical " The Eight Lancaster Lads". Age eleven he appeared in "Giddy Ostende" at London's Hippodrome. From age 17 to 24 he was with Fred Karno's English Vaudeville troupe which brought him to New York in 1910, age 21. In November of 1913 he signed a contract with Mack Sennett (Keystone) and left for Hollywood the next month. His first movie was "Making a Living" in 1914. He did 35 films that year. Moved to Essanay in 1915 and did 14 more, moved on to Mutual for 12 two-reelers 1916-1917. In 1918 he joined First National ( later absorbed by Warner Bros.) and in 1919 forms United Artists along with Douglas Fairbanks, Mary Pickford, and D.W. Griffith. His first full length film was The Kid 1921 , his first for United Artist fully produced and directed by himself.

Odd note
On March 3rd 1978 his dead body was stolen from Sur-Vevey cemetery. It took until May 18th to locate the body.

Charlie Chaplin entered a Charlie Chaplin
look alike competition in Monte Carlo.

He came in third.

Tidbit

The playwright Charles MacArthur had been brought to Hollywood to do a screenplay, but was finding it difficult to write visual jokes.
"What's the problem?" asked Chaplin
" How, for example, could I make a fat lady , walking down Fifth Avenue , slip on a banana peel and still get a laugh? It's been done a million times," said MacArthur. " What's the best way to get the laugh? Do I show first the banana peel then the fat lady approaching, then she slips? Or do I show the fat lady first, then the banana peel, and then she slips?"
" Neither," said Chaplin without a moment's hesitation. " You show the fat lady approaching ; then you show the banana peel; then you show the fat lady and the banana peel together; then she steps over the peel and disappears down a manhole."
