Registration Instructions for Volunteers

General Requirements:

1. Be in physical condition to walk 8 to 10 Km per night.
2. No severe eyesight problems (most work is at night, without artificial lights).
3. No abuse of illegal drugs; no consumption of alcohol during working hours or abuse of alcohol at any time.
4. Preferably not smoking. Those who do smoke should do so only in open areas and never on nightly patrols.
5. Be willing to work under difficult and uncomfortable conditions.
6. Have a personal insurance policy.

How to register:

A: Return the Volunteer Registration Form to the Volunteer Coordinator at the above phone, fax, e-mail or address.
B: Determine if there is space, in your chosen accommodation option, during the dates you plan to visit. This is also your opportunity to ask any general questions.
C: Make your reservation for the dates you plan to visit and appointment to visit the office in San Jose.
D: Make a personal visit to the ANAI office in San Jose at least 24 hours before leaving for Gandoca (you cannot go directly to Gandoca). This visit enables you to pay any outstanding fees, confirms your reservation and allows us to give you final information about the project and directions on how to get there.

NOTE: If you do not visit the office in San Jose to confirm your reservation, you may lose your reservation or scholarship. Money will not refunded for missed days.

PERMITS:

The project will organize all necessary permits so that volunteers can work together with the Refuge and ANAI staff in patrol teams which combine conservation and enforcement functions.

DIRECTIONS TO THE ANAI OFFICE:

If you arrive by Taxi, give this address to the Cab driver.

Costado norte de la plaza del Colegio de Monterrey, Barrio Vargas Araya, San Pedro de Montes de Oca. ( North side of the sports field of the Colegio Monterrey, Barrio Vargas Araya ).

Or

Take the “San Pedro, Vargas Araya” bus from the corner of Ave central and Calle 9. Get off at restaurant (Soda) San Bosco, walk three blocks north towards the corner shop “Super Si”. At “Super Si” turn left and the office is at the end of the street, and is facing you. The office is a large compound surrounded by trees next to the school sports field. There is not sign board outside.

WHAT TO BRING?

Sheet sleeping bag or sheets
Mosquito net
Dark colored lightweight clothing for patrolling (two or three changes of clothes)
Comfortable lightweight shoes for patrolling
Raincoat or Poncho
Flashlight and spare batteries
Hiking shoes
Insect repellent and other medication
Alarm clock
