Dear Potential volunteer,

Thank you for your interest in volunteering with Asociacion ANAI in Costa Rica. Founded in 1978, ANAI is a non-profit organization seeking to promote sustainable development and biodiversity conservation with the campesino and indigenous communities of Talamanca. We work to create a thriving grassroot economic development process that actively conserves important social, cultural, and natural resources and values.

Our main office is in San Jos. All of our projects are in Talamanca, and we maintain a field administrative office in Talamanca as well. ANAI is currently recruiting volunteers for three projects:

Project 1: Farming and Forest Conservation at two sites
Volunteers work on reforestation and maintenance of tropical crops, rotating between two ANAI field sites.
Dates Available: year-round
Time Commitment: 2 months
Cost: $160 registration, $3 per night lodging, plus food expenses ($5 per day) (Out of the country.)
$60 (in country) registration fee.

Site 1: Finca Lomas Agroforestry Preserve: Purchased in 1978, the Finca Lomas is part protected forest reserve and part experimental farm. ANAI uses this property to develop possible alternative crops for the local family farm economy in Talamanca. Volunteers must spend at least one month at this site. NB. Please bear in mind that it does take a couple of weeks to adjust to the environment of the farm.

Site 2: El Cruce, ANAI’s Administrative Field Office: Volunteers at other projects occasionally spend up to a week at a time participating in general facility maintenance, groundskeeping, reforestation, and crop management. El Cruce offers volunteers a connection to the outside world through telephones and fax.

Project 2: Sea Turtle Conservation
Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge: Since 1985, ANAI has worked with the local community in Gandoca to strengthen the beach habitat for turtle nesting, and to protect the turtle eggs from poaching and domestic predators. Volunteers patrol the beaches to retrieve and relocate turtle egg nests.
Dates Available: March – July, turtle nesting season
Time Commitment: at least 7 days
Cost: $20 registration, Prices range from $5 for camping, $12 per night food and lodging (in tents) and $25 for cabins.

Project 3: Special Project Coordinator in Administrative Offices
San Jos: A limited number of volunteer positions in the San Jose office are available for those interested in the organizational management, planning, and promotion of an environmental NGO in Costa Rica. We seek volunteers interested in aiding in tropical conservation and community development, but who would like to gain office rather than field experience. Excellent communication, organizational, and managerial skills are necessary. Basic conversational Spainish is required.
Dates Available: year-round
Time Commitment: 4-6 months
