Mamenchisaurus (ma-MENCH-ee-sore-us)

A Late Jurassic sauropod from Mamenchi, Southern China [for Mamenchi, Sichuan Province, China]. Mamenchisaurus had what could be the longest neck any animal have ever had. No known dinosaur had as many cervical vertebras (19). Long thin outgrowths from many of them overlapped with the underlying vertebras. This strengthened the neck and made it stiffer, except where it was connected with head and body. Some experts place this dinosaur in its own family.

Length: 22 m
