MARTIAL ARTS WEAPONS

Nunchaku
The art of nunchaku owes its technical excellence almost entirely to Okinawan endeavors. The nunchaku is a double-pieced hardwood weapon. The separate pieces of wood are hinged by silk cords, end- to- end, by a universal point that permits freedom of swivel. Each piece is identical in shape, being about one foot to fifteen inches in length and of square, hexagonal, or octagonal cross section. Each piece may be of one diameter for its entire length, or may be tapered slightly. Attacks with nunchaku are used durring close fighting with the enemy.
Sai
The sai is primarily a defensive weapon. It has always been a truncheon, never a blade weapon. the sai may be used to deflect, block or parry a cutting or stroking attack of a bladed or staff weapon. Three sai are usually carried, one in each hand and one thrust through the belt or sash of the user. The third one is to replace one that might be lost in combat, or may serve as a projectile weapon.

Rokushakubo
Rokushakubo is the name of this weapon as well as well as a fighting system. In Japanese roku means "six,"shaku is a measurement of unit of about one foot in length, and bo means "staff". As its name implies, it is a hardwood polelike weapon about six feet in length. Chinese staffs usually are of an equal diameter the full length of their body. Okinawan rokushakubo have tapered end, the diameter from between one inch and two inches. The staff operates best from outside the enemys body.

Kama
The sickle was an agricultural tool. This tool has been used as long as rice has been grown but was not long before it was used as a weapon. On Okinawa the sickle is called a kama, probably brought there from the Asian continent. Kama tactics are primarily Okinawan. Some changes of this weapon had to be made in order that the operator would not wound himself. The hardwood handle is slightly larger at the butt end to keep the weapon from slipping out of the users hand. Kama attacks are chopping, hooking, hacking, striking, blocking,,deflecting, or covering actons against the enemy. Kama can be used singly or in pairs. In pairs swinging patterns are propeller-like actions.

Tui-Fa
Early Okinawans were determined to continue their practice of te. The wooden handle normally wedged into a hole in the side of the millstone serves their combat purpose well. This handle, known as the tui-fa consisted of a tapered shaft of hardwood fifteen to twenty inches long. To this shaft was affixed a cylindrical grip projecting at right angles from the shaft at a place five or six inches down from the larger end of the shaft. The handle could quickly be dismantled from the millstone and brought into action. It was held by grasping the short grip loosely but firmly so it could not drop out of the users hand. Most commonly, two tui-fa were used, one in each hand. With the tui-fa lying along the undersides of the forearms so that the short projection beyond the grip extended foreward toward the enemy, the operator could punch or strike with great force. The hardwood projection acted like an extension of their knuckles. By a quickflick of his arms the user could reverse the tui-fa so the longer end of the shaft would fly foreward The alternate reversing of one or both was confusing to the opponent.

THE FIVE ANIMALS OF SHAOLIN KUNG - FU

Dragon-Fighting Spirit
The dragon is a legendary reptile, havingwings, huge claws and a firey breath. In some folklore the dragon symbolizes destruction and evil, yet in other mythology, the dragon is belived to have more benificial powers.Among the Chinese people the dragon is regarded as a symbol of good fortune.

Tiger-Strength and tenacity
The largest of the cats is the tiger. The tiger's coat is often a bright golden color. It has black stripes on the head, body, limbs, and tail. Tigers are native to asia and no other continent. The basic color of the coat ranges from a light tinge of yellow on the belly to a deep yellow or orange on the back. The head, body, and limbs are striped with black; the tail has black rings. This coloring blends well with dried grass or a thicket of reeds and makes the tiger almost invisible.

Leopard-Speed and Power
This spotted animal of the cat family lives in Africa, Asia Minor, Central Asia, and the Far East. It is a large cat, closely related to the lion and tiger. Leopards vary greatly in size. The leopard is normally a buff or tawny color with dark spots. The undersurface of the body is usually lighter in color. The leopard lives in bush and forest areas. It is agile, can climb trees, and is a remarkable jumper.

Crane-Grace and Balance
Through the still waters of open marshlands the sandhill crane wades on stiltlike legs. Its long neck erect, it scans the countryside with keen eyes for signs of danger. Among the wariest of birds, it detects the faintest sound or sight of danger. With a few long running strides, it takes slowly to the air, flapping its wings in a lazy rhythm. It always flies with its neck and legs stretched out in line with its body.

Snake-Inner Power
Snakes exist in all regions of the world except near the poles (though few species are found in regions that have long winters). The greatest diversity is in the tropics. Most snakes are presumed to have poor long-distance vision, but the ability of some species to detect prey or enemies by sight suggests that they have keen short-range vision

HISTORY OF THE YIN YANG

The famous Chinese Yin-Yang symbol surrounded by eight trigrams which figuratively express nature and its changes. The Yin-Yang symbol, also called the "Double Fish" diagram, represents two opposites residing together. In the heart of Yin will always be found a small part of Yang, and vice versa. Within strength is found weakness; within hardness, softness; inactivity, activity. Inside a sleeping newborn babe there rests a strongly beating heart..
The myriad of things carry Yin and embrace Yang."
Tao Te Ching
Dating as far back as the sixteenth century B.C. we see the first mention of Tao and Yin and Yang, dealing with the duality of nature; "Yin and Yang, together they are called tao." In the early phases there was no worship of supernatural deities. To the philosophical Taoist, the ontological elements of all universal beings and even the universe itself are combined into Tao. They existed before the universe was born. Tao has no limits. Its existence is eternal. Tao is not a supernatural force. It is the ultimate principle of the universe. Tao is the prime element from which everything is created in nature. If this sounds puzzling and abstract in the Western sense, it must be understood that from the Chinese scientific view Tao stands on solid ground with its explanation of the mysterious existence of the universe. Tao is composed of two forces represented by Yin and Yang. Yin is characterized as the negative force of darkness, coldness and emptiness. Yang stands for the positive energy which produces light, warmth and fullness.
