Birding at Fraser's Hill ( 8-10 Jan. 2000 - Hari Raya Weekend)
Fourteen birders led by Ooi Beng Yean went up to this oft-visited hill station to bird. We met up with a few Selangor birders and Dr. Neoh Chin Boon and family. As usual the birders birded mainly along the Telecoms loop, the rubbish dump, the High Pines area and the new downhill road. At the rubbish dump a male Red-bearded Bee-eater was found. The rubbish dump is a favoured haunt for various drongos as well. A Lesser Racket-tailed Drongo was seen perched on a dead tree making its calls. A male Siberian Thrush which is a shy bird and difficult to sight was briefly observed at the rubbish dump before flying into the bamboo clumps The Hill Blue Flycatcher is one of several species of the flycatcher family found at the rubbish dump. Also frequently observed was the Grey-headed Flycatcher and both male and female Mugimaki Flycatcher which is a beautiful migratory bird.
Early the next morning a Greater Racket-tailed Drongo and a Thick-billed Pigeon was sighted at the Gap road. Various species of drongos are common in Fraser Hill. From the High Pines a Great Hornbill was seen in a distant tree. We could locate it only after hearing its calls. A male Grey-chinned Minivet was observed along the new road, among a bird wave. The Chairman reported seeing a pair orange-backed woodpecker and a brown-capped woodpecker at about 6.00 p.m. on Sunday. Also seen at the Gap road early in the morning was a Tiger Shrike, a winter migrant. A Siamang was sighted along the Telecom loop. A few barking dogs around made it veryfretful.
