Children Nature Camp – Papan (30-31 May 2000)
MNS Perak branch held a children camp
in the Papan Forestry Nursery from 30th to 31st May 2000 during the school
holidays. 52 primary school children from 10 primary schools in Perak participated
in this camp. They are from SRJK (C) Wan Hwa 1, Menglembu, SRJK (C) Sam
Chai, Ipoh , SRJK (C) Ave Maria Convent, Ipoh, SRJK (C) Bukit Merah,
Lahat, SRJK (C) Sam Tet, Ipoh, SRJK (C) Kg. Tawas, Ipoh, SRJK (C)
Perak, Ipoh, S. K. Raja Perempuan, Ipoh, S. K. Sri Kinjang, Chenderiang
which sent 6 orang asli children. S.K. Sultan Yussof, Batu Gajah, Perak
sent 4 hearing-impaired children. Unfortunately 9 school children could
not participate in this camp as the response was overwhelming so registration
closed early. Nevertheless, their names and contact numbers were noted
down and hopefully they would be able to participate in the children camp
next year.
This year a bus was hired to pick
up all the participants from SRJK(C) Wan Hwa, Menglembu to the campsite.
5 scouts and 10 volunteers including MNS members and School Nature Club
(KPA) teacher-advisors in Ipoh were requested to help in this camp. They
were very helpful and cooperative. Without them, this children camp could
not be carried out successfully.
We started the camp programmes
from morning 8.00 a.m. on 30.May until 4.00 p.m. the next day. All the
participants had the opportunity to try out paper recycling. They enjoyed
themselves very much in carrying out the other events ? Treasure Hunt,
Station Games, Fun in the Stream, Blind Trail, Guessing the Sound (of Nature),
Insect Trap, Singing and Night Walk. They were also given a talk on making
compost by Mr.Yong Kam Foo, a KPA teacher from Yuk Choy High School in
Jelapang, Perak. During the talk, all the children were able to feel and
smell the soil obtained using different processes in making
the final compost product. The children paid full attention to this interesting
talk. During the night walk, the children were lucky to spot the big and
shining red-eyed moths sucking fruit juice in the jungle area just outside
the campsite main gate. The children were able to observe a few green and
black cicadas, different size of beautiful moths, grasshoppers and other
insects on the screen set up in the hall.
On the following day morning,
there was heavy rain. Fortunately after an hour, the rain stopped. The
children could start trekking in the jungle at 9.00 am. It was a 3-hour
waterfall trail led by the Ranger, En Mohammad. All the participants
made it although a few timid girls were a bit scared of on the trail.
Anyway, most of the children enjoyed themselves very much for they had
a good experience trekking in the jungle. They could see various types
of jungle plants and trees and go through different levels of grounds in
the jungle. After trekking, the children organised into 5 groups
were asked to compose a nature picture each, using materials collected
from the jungle.
Towands
the end of the programme, the children were given prizes and certificates
of participation. They went back to Menglembu at about 4.30 p.m. All the
children were very happy and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Feedback from
the participants indicate that they would like to take part in the children
camp again next year. They also expressed hope that they could stay in
the tent.
