Maxwell Hill – Birding (3-4 June 2000)
A large party of more than 20
Perak birders went up Maxwell hill during the yang Dipertuan Agong's birthday
weekend and stayed at the Speedy Rest house and the newly renovated Nest
which is nearby. We saw a lot of interesting birds including the Red-headed
Trogon, Orange-breasted Trogon, Rufous-browed Flycatcher and the Large
Niltava (exhibiting the juvenile plumage before transforming into an adult
male). At the Burmese pool area, I logged the usual woodpeckers and spiderhunters
with the addition of a Grey-breasted Spiderhunter. Mr Loke Choong Ming
was been declared the "trogon man" for being the first person to spot both
species of trogons. As the chairman, Mr. Cheaw Hon Ming had to leave
for Ipoh he had to walk all the way down because the jeep did not come
up to Speedy Rest House to fetch him. While walking downhill he saw a Chestnut-naped
Forktail at the waterfall between the 7 and 6 Km at about 6.35 pm. Probably
it came because there was no traffic after that time. It was a lifer for
him so it made up for being abandoned!
I found one cuckoo at the foothill
jeep station. I think it is probably an Indian Cuckoo but could not be
very sure as the bird was having its back facing me all the time. Does
anyone have other suggestions? Other pictures have uploaded to my recent
album.
