Fraser Hill Bird Race (10-11 June 2000)
The 13th International Fraser's Hill Bird Race held on 10 & 11 June 2000 drew 37 teams from all over the country. This was a big improvement on last year's response when there were only 25 teams. For the first time, we had teams from the local school and PERHILITAN. This year's programme also had other side events including a flower arrangement competition, children's art contest, a talk on birds of Fraser's Hill (given by BCC Chairman, Mr Allen Jeyarajasingam), stage shows, exhibitions from MNS, WWF and PERHILITAN and bird art for sale.
There were 12 teams in the Local category, 15 teams in the Novice category and 10 in the Advanced category. There were participants from Singapore, Canada, Belgium and Australia. MNS members were well represented with 4 teams from Selangor, 3 from Perak and 2 from Singapore.
Prizes in kind were awarded to the first 5 teams in each category and also all participants were given certificates of participation.
The race was officiated by YB Dato' Dr Ng Yen Yen, Deputy Minister of Art, Culture and Tourism and prizes were given away by YB Puan Maznah Mazlan, Pahang state Exco for tourism. The arbitrators were Encik Rapeah Muda (PERHILITAN Pahang), Mr Allen Jeyarajasingam (MNS-BCC) and Mr Mike Chong (Meranti Tours). The results of the Bird Race 2000 are as indicated in table (number of species sighted in brackets).
