Water conservation is not only a national issue, but also a worldwide issue. The Klang Valley water crisis in 1998 proves that while our country is blessed with abundant rain it could still face water problems. The Malaysian Nature Society (MNS) therefore wishes to congratulate Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting, Minister of Housing and Local Government, for getting the government to take the lead in water conservation by installing dual flushing toilets in all new government buildings.
Another water savings devices should also be considered e.g., low water
shower heads and taps, as well as charging a higher rate for higher usage.
The government should also encourage the developers and house-owners to
replace their existing system with the new system by providing them with
incentives. One incentive could be waiving import duty for dual flush system
as most of it is still imported. Alternatively, the government could encourage
the local manufacturers with some tax incentives.
The public must be aware on water conservation issues and play their
part in efficient use of water. More awareness programs on water conservation
should be transmitted through the multi media. Simple collection of rainwater
for watering plants, washing cars, the toilets and cleaning floors can
help save millions of liter a month. There are many simple ways that one
can save water.
It is hoped that the government will be more proactive in water conservation and management.
