MNS Boh Tea Field Study Centre, Cameron Highlands. (Sat. – Sun. 27-28 December 1997)
Ooi led more than 30 members (including their families) to spend the last week of the year amidst the cool breeze and the fragrance of the tea bushes. Lim Kim Chye has spruced up the place compared to the last time we were there. The Chairman, his wife and a Selangor branch birder (Yoke Lin) were the last to check in as they spent the afternoon birding along the Robinson Falls trail. An uncommon Blue and white flycatcher was spotted which was a lifer for all three. The chairman spotted some gesneriads of the Didymocarpus genera which he could not identify so seeds were collected. Along the trail one cannot help but notice the resplendant turquoise blue green leaves of Begonia parvonina. They finally left the Robinson Falls at about 7.00 pm to have dinner and join the group at the field study centre.
The cool mountain air was a good starting point for chatting which went on until 11.30 pm. Early next morning some left for birding in Gunung Brinchang along the summit road hoping to see some species which are only seen above 6000 feet and trekking. A pair of Siberian thrushes with an immature male was spotted lower down the road. At the summit a golden-throated barbet displayed his vocal abilities in full view of our members. A large cuckoo shrike and a chestnut tail minla were also spotted. Some members explored the mossy trails. Yoke Lin claimed two other lifers (a Rufous-winged Fulvetta and a Chestnut-crowned Warbler) and declared the sightings completed her list of highland birds. By 3.00 pm the members made their way back to Ipoh.
