TRAFFIC Appeal

TRAFFIC Southeast Asia would like to request the assistance of all MNS members in helping to uncover and report instances of illegal wildlife (plants and animals) trade in Malaysia. Traffic is a conservation program of WWF The World Wide Fund for Nature and the IUCN The World Conservation Union. TRAFFICs special mission is to help ensure that wildlife trade is at sustainable levels and in accordance with domestic and international laws and agreements. This is achieved through investigation, monitoring and reporting of such trade, particularly that which is detrimental to the survival of flora and fauna and that which is illegal.

The illegal trade in wildlife takes a toll on Malaysia wildlife as well as wildlife throughout the world. Protected animals are illegally traded in many different forms and for a variety of reasons. These animals, both local and imported, are sometimes found live in the pet trade. Other species are used in traditional medicines (such as rhino horn, tiger bone, etc.). Still many more are used in the food industry. Protected meat is sometimes served in restaurants illegally. Illegal forest practices and trade in protected plants are also of concern.

If you know of or hear anything you suspect of being illegal involving the trade of protected species, please report it to TRAFFIC Southeast Asia and be sure to include the following:

Location: Address, Shop or restaurant name, individuals name etc.
Situation: Pet trade, illegal ownership, restaurant, hunting, etc.
Species: What species did you observe? (Local names are fine if you do not know the scientific names.) Include quantity, prices, condition of specimen and any other details if possible.
