In Search of the World's Largest Flower (Sunday 12 July, 1998)
Chang Kok Kai led 23 members to our favourite Rafflesia site, somewhere in Gopeng, which is a branch secret. This is an ecologically sensitive area as it is quite near to human settlements and thus very susceptible to unscrupulous human encroachment and commercial harvesting. After an hour's hike to the spot about 10 buds were seen while a bloom which has seen better days still attracted close attention by members. The other site nearer to the starting point had been totally lost to human destruction. The MNS Council conservation committee is looking into this seriously to devise a strategy to preserve this site for posterity. Please write in if you have any idea for its conservation.
