Coffee as fertilizer

I remember years ago, my mother using coffee grinds and banana peels to fertilise her roses. I, through the gift of modern technology, asked her if my recollections were correct and why she used them? I am forwarding her response to you all.

Hey,

I used coffee and banana peels on the roses outside the home in Delaware that were climbers and the roses were absolutely blooming constantly and what great flowers! You dig the soil loose around the plant and bury the banana peel below the surface and the coffee grounds you sprinkle around the surface, this stimulates growth. I don't know if you can use it on the violets or not. You could try it on one of your plants that is maybe not doing well. I cut the banana peels up in small pieces to use this way. Hope it works for you.
