The growth of international eco-tourism is an encouraging sign that Malaysia could conserve and protect its natural heritage and yet develop its economic potential. The growing interest worldwide, too, in the resources of tropical rainforests for healing and materials that have been extracted on a sustainable basis must be considered. Studies conducted in central American forests have concluded that a more sensitive approach to forest usage generates far more revenue long-term for a much wider section of the community than does the single exploitation of logging.
I realize that everyone now is pressed to generate resources for a nation beset by economic problems, but I would plead that you try to find another solution. If indeed there is no other apart from logging, please ensure that the forestry techniques are sustainable and in the best public long-term interests. There are techniques for high-end logging practices, for example, using helicopters instead of damaging roads carved through the forest to extract the timber, that must be considered.
The value of such timber would be much higher in the profitable markets of Europe where people are concerned about the origins of products they buy. Focus on this market and reap the benefits in terms of financial returns and national prestige; help to put Malaysia on the map as a forerunner in development and conservation. There must be companies in these difficult times which are prepared to develop better logging practices rather than lose a contract.
Far better still to retain the forest for its individual uniqueness. There is so little remaining within Malaysia that can survive in the long term. Most forest reserves are fragmented and damaged, offering only small habitats that cannot support larger species. Where will there be tigers and elephants if not in Belum? Even within Taman Negara there is insufficient breeding diversity to ensure the viability of large species.
Without Belum, Malaysia would be bereft. Please conserve it for the future of our nation.
