Jungle Trekking At Pos Slim (Tuesday – Nuzul Quran,
5 January, 1999)
Although some members did not receive their newsletter or received
them late 21 members and non-members turned up for this bit of uphill trekking
along an old logging track. Leaving our cars the participants were clearly
divided into two groups. The young and sprightly reached the top of the
ridge very quickly to be rewarded with crisp mountain air and a vantage
view of Gunung Cabang. The stragglers consisted of birders and the not
so fit group who took the time to look out for lifers but more were heard
than seen. Clambering up a steep slope we began descending from the ridge
through a thickly forested patch until the participants came to the top
of a magnificent waterfall towering 200 ft high. Here the group rested
and had their lunch before continuing the downhill trek.
Making our way down was a difficult one and my fieldscope was passed
gingerly through many hands before we reached the middle part of the falls
which has step-like ledges to give the beautiful effect of cascading falls.
Along the way a long black snake (most probably a black cobra) was seen
so the trip leader had to be extra careful while various interesting flora
were noted. Of special interest is a pine-like tree which could not be
identified. After a half-hour rest it was home for the group. This place
is certainly worth another visit. (Report by Cheaw Hon Ming)
