The MNS Secretariat is now operational from the new premises at Jalan
Kelantan. The
Secretariat is currently occupying the main building while the annex
is being used (temporarily) as a store. We are planning for a simple opening
by the KSN on 27 February 1999. A number of proposals will be presented
to the KSN for further development of the premises. Among the further development
plans is the establishment of an urban education centre. Selangor Branch
will most likely utilize the porta-cabins after rehabilitation.
BirdLife International World Conference
We are now proceeding aggressively to raise funds for the BirdLife World Conference to be held 14-16 October 1999 and the Global Partnership meeting 10-13 October 1999. Among the highlights of the World Conference are The State of the World 1999 Report and the launch of BirdLife 2000. The Secretariat has produced a promotional kit to raise funds for the World Conference which will be a major event for MNS in 1999 with extensive local and international exposure. Volunteers will be needed for the event and Glenda Noramly is coordinating the voluntary effort. Melvin and Melinda are key persons working on the Conference/Partnership meeting in the Secretariat. A new fundraiser will also be joining the team in February ’99.
Secretariat Work Plan
The Secretariat is currently conducting the review of departments with the respective Committees. This will be followed by the completion of the Staff Manual by the end of February 1999. Thereafter the priority will be to carry out a review of our administrative system to ensure that we have adequate critical operating procedures. The focus is on ensuring that we have functioning systems which will improve our capacity to serve the membership needs eg. Response times for processing of membership applications, membership queries. As preparation for our 60th anniver-sary next year, work will also start on a working paper for our Strategy Plan to take stock of ourselves and chart the path for our future.
Rotary District Vocational Service Award
On 24th January 1999, MNS was presented with an award from Rotary District
3300 for contributions to the betterment of the environment. This award
is recognition of the tireless
efforts of the many dedicated volunteers in the Society who place the
pursuit of the protection of our natural heritage above self. To you, Congratulations
from the Secretariat.
EIA Review Panels
MNS participates in review panels of EIA’s, especially on projects which may have a detrimental impact on the environment. This is an important role and we need the assistance of members to help sit on these review panels, which are now too many to be serviced by the Secretariat staff alone. If you can assist please do contact the Secretariat.
