"Our Claims Not Baseless, says Nature Society"
Referring to today's issue of the NST,
MNS would like to clarify that Dr. Appanah did not make the claim that
the 'berembang' trees would be affected by the proposed dam. The
claim was made by MNS, and we stand by this.
However, Dr. Appanah did make the claim
that the sampling size conducted for the terrestrial survey in the impoundment
and catchment area was too small and under-represented, and we (along with
WWF) supports this statement.
We had earlier sent a press statement
(dated March 20, 1999) explaining this, but it seems that it had been quoted
out of context, and in today's NST, it appears like Dr. Appanah made the
claim that the 'berembang' trees would be affected. Meanwhile, our clarification
on the sampling size at the dam site was omitted.
MNS hope that this statement would further
clarify any misinterpretation on this matter.
