Activities Report 1999 July Newsletter
Protecting the dugong habitat
The fishermen who found and released the two dugungs that they found have
to be commended for their empathy. It shows that all the awareness and
education efforts done to increase public consciousness is working. Further
more, MNS hopes that the Johore state will also take into account a few
things if it intends to set up a sanctuary of the dugong habitat areas
: - The possible demolition of the Causeway to make way for
a bridge that will bring about more ship traffic in the Johore Straits.
- Factories and other human activities on the coastline will also
have to be monitored to ensure the existing sea grass areas will not be
effected.
- No fishing activities in the dugong habitat areas.
The Fisheries Department must keep up the
good work that they have done so far. It is hoped that the task force which
has been set up to investigate the dugongs deaths with the help of the
Australian expert, Dr. Helen Marsh will succeed in identifying the problem
and come up with immediate measures to rectify the situation.
