Gunung Yong Belar (Deepavali Weekend: 6 - 8 Nov. 1999)  Trekking and Birding
Time & Meeting Place : To be confirmed

Participants will leave Ipoh on Saturday afternoon/evening and pass the night in Tringkap (lodging in Tringkap will be arranged). Hiking will start on Sunday morning and should reach the peak after 6-8 hours. Last water point, 4 hours from the top. Return to cars by 5.00 pm Monday evening and back to Ipoh. Confirm your participation by payment before 4.11.99. Only 12 places available. Cost per pax: RM30.00 to car driver, RM20.00 for jeep ride, Lodging (about RM40.00). For those who are not prepared to trek up Yong Belar, join up with some Penang birders and stay two nights in Tringkap and bird around the foothills of Y. Belar and G. Brinchang (contact Cheaw 3128716)

Jungle Trekking to Taman Rishah Waterfall (Sunday, 7 November 1999)
Time & place: 8.30 am., Ipoh Garden Plaza
Leader: Ng Chang Chai   (5477744 - O)
Participants will be trekking along side a jungle stream with cool clear water under the shady canopy of the Kledang-Saiong forest before reaching the waterfall. Please backpack your food and drinking water for an enjoyable picnic at the waterfall. Proper jungle trekking shoes are recommended for the trip while a raincoat is optional. Kindly arrange your own transport and confirm your participation with the trip leader.

Members’ Night (Saturday 13 November 1999) Slide Show/Talk on the Silk Road
Time: 8.00 pm
Venue: YMCA Lecture hall
Mah King Wah has just visited China and rediscovered the fabled old Silk Road. Those who are interested in making a similar trip should attend and see the wonderous sights that await them. Come early although some time is set aside for members to interact and exchange news and views.

Boating Trip to Pulau Sembilan (Sunday 14 November 1999)
Time & Meeting Place : Lumut - To be confirmed

The last trip on 18 September was an enjoyable as the weather was good though visibility was poor. This has vetted the appetite of marine enthusiasts for more of such trips. This one-day trip to the Sembilan Islands will depart from Lumut at about 8.30 a.m., returning at about 6.00 p.m. Exact time and place for meeting will be advised later as well as the cost which is likely to be about RM50.00 per head. The day's programme includes snorkelling, diving and a beach picnic. Members must arrange their own transport and snorkelling/diving equipment. Diving will only be available for qualified divers (a C-card must be produced). Please contact Stewart for more information.

Birding in Kuala Gula (20-21 November)
Time & Meeting Place : 7.00 am in front of IGB Plaza
Leader : Ooi Beng Yean (Tel. 5476632)
Confirmation of the trip is still pending as accommodation has yet to be confirmed. Beginners and seasoned birders should join Ooi to bird in this premier bird sanctuary. Accommodation at the chalets are limited so please book early and confirm your participation by telephone and payment. Arrange your own transport (suggested payment to drivers RM20.00).

Members’ Night (Saturday 11 December 1999)  Organic Farming: Slide Show/Talk
Time: 8.00 pm
Venue: YMCA Lecture hall
Eric Anthony Kwaku Rackl, a volunteer at S.M. Yuk Choy, in organic farming from Evergreen State College, Washington State, will talk on organic farming using common organic household trash to turn to compost on a fairly economic scale. He would also be interested in sharing some thoughts on why organic agriculture is important and how it can positively effect the environment. A visit to the farm is envisaged for the next morning.

Camping on Pulau Sembilan/Pulau Jarak (17-19 December)
Marine enthusiasts will find this trip interesting as there are plans to stay overnight on one of the islands. Members should grab this opportunity as it is certainly a difficult one to arrange. Call Stewart Forbes (Tel. 6912400-H) for further details on time of departure and venue.

Birding in Pasoh Forest Reserve, Negeri Sembilan (21-23 December)
Time & Meeting Place : To be confirmed
Leader : Ooi Beng Yean (Tel. 5476632)
One of the driest places in West Malaysia, this lowland forest offers an opportunity to bird and appreciate the flora and fauna. Arrange your own transport. Leader will try to arrange for basic accommodation and car pool.

Birding in Thale Noi, South Thailand (24-26 December)
Time & Meeting Place : To be confirmed

Information obtained so far is that we will meet in Hadyai on 23 December (place to be confirmed) and proceed to Patthalung the next morning meeting up with the Kedah group. Accommodation in Patthalung is available at a moderate rate. Expect to spend RM 400 per pax for travel, food and accommodation. Please arrange for a sleeping partner to defray the cost and car pool. The leader may change the date as the Christmas season may make hotel bookings in Hadyai a problem.

Celebrating the New Millenium (Friday 31 December 1999)
Time & Meeting Place : 9.00 pm at the Iron bridge

Join Mah King Wah and most of the Perak Branch in celebrating the new Millenium in Kledang Hill over looking Ipoh as the millenium draws to a close. Bring along torchlights, water, food etc and wear proper shoes and attire. 



Further Down the Road

Members should take note of the coming trips proposed and prepare themselves physically and financially. More information will be given as soon as it is available in the next newsletter.
  1. Birding in North Thailand (1- 8  January 2000). 
    Cheaw Hon Ming would like to bird in Doi Chiang Dao, Chiang Saen and Doi Inthanon again as he is more equipped and informed. Only serious birders will be prioritised (maximum 10). Be prepared for an earlier departure.
  2. Visit Pahang 2000. 
    The Pahang Branch has invited us to visit any part of Pahang and they would repay us the hospitality they received from the Perak Branch (Thanks Liew!). Members are requested to send in proposals to visit any interesting place(s) in Pahang (probably April) to Liew Chin Chow or the Chairman.
