Other
measures:
1. Internet web site created for toad lift. 300+ visits so far.
Part of international herpetological conservation network.
2. Special drain covers designed and fitted by Beds County Council
Highway Maintenance: important innovation in conservation techniques.
3. ACO 500 Toad tunnel installed under new road plus 108m of purpose
built guide fencing.
Fourth tunnel of this specification in England.
First toad tunnel of any sort in Bedfordshire.
4. Temporary 30cm high guide fencing approximately 30m total length
erected on the east and west banks of the pond for toadlets
and froglets.
Significance
1. Amphibia need water to breed but live on land. It is vital
for their continued success that there is no further encroachment
on the areas of hedge, scrub and rough grass.
2. Frogs and Toads are only one item in the food chain. They eat
insects including pests, and in turn are predated on by a variety
of animals.
3. Global amphibian decline subject of much scientific research.
Makes success of Saxon Gate all the more remarkable.
Other Species
1. Birds whose declining numbers are matters of national concern
(song thrush, sparrow and especially skylark) frequent the site.
2. The locally scarce Yellow Rattle has just been recorded near
the pond.
3. Site attracts dragon and damselflies which make use of rough
grass and pond.
Educational Potential
1. Important flora and fauna.
2. Proximity to major new residential development and Saxon Pool
leisure complex would allow convenient and safe access for school
visits.
3. Signs explaining what to look for could easily be erected.
Proposals
1. Survey to establish site status of plants and animals.
So far only amphibians studied scientifically.
2. New developments should incorporate mitigation measures e.g.
wildlife corridors, non point source drainage systems.
3. Management plan to be drawn up for whole area.
4. Meeting should be arranged between interested parties:
Local Planning Authority Saxon Pool
Manager
Ivel Valley Countryside Project Biggleswade
Town Council
Ivel Wildlife Group Landowner(s)/Developer(s)
MBDC Leisure and Tourism Manager
Beds Wild Life Trust
to discuss above issues and opportunities.
