Sophie

Jessi, our daughter, Larry and I were talking about a friends ferret ( I don't remember why ) and Jessi mentioned that Matt had bought his at family pets, a local pet store. Okay, we decide to check out the pet store. They have one ferret left. A small sable female. She's very curious about us. We ask if they can hold her for us until Friday. They cannot. Okay, we say, we'll take the chance that no one will buy her before then. We go home and begin building a cage for her. The next day we go back and hold the ferret again. Someone else is interested in her we are told, but they would like us to have her. We give them a check to hold her until Thursday. We go home and work on the cage some more. In the mean time we've also been reading on the Internet about ferrets and their care. We are wondering what to name the ferret. Larry suggests Sophie. I'm not too hot on the idea because I had a bunny named Sophie and still missed her. Finally I agree, Sophie would be a good name for the ferret. Wednesday we go to the store again, but this time we bring the ferret, Sophie home with us. We didn't know what to expect when we let Sophie down in the bathroom. She went nuts, dancing and dooking all over the place like some demented creature with its brain in side ways. Finally we took her in the living room to play. Larry was lying on the floor and Sophie started crawling up his pants leg. The look on his face was priceless.
Sophie's birthday is June 2, 1996. She was nineteen weeks old when we bought her. I read different ways of training your ferret on the Internet. One day after it had snowed overnight, I took Sophie outdoors. What fun! Sophie tunneled under the snow and when she got cold, rode around inside my jacket. Sophie and I went for a walk with Sophie inside my jacket. Sophie was a challenge over Christmas. We had finally gotten the tree so it could be on the floor, before this it was always on a low table. She liked to jump up under the tree and knock the balls off.

Sophie, January 15, 1999. She loves having her picture taken.

Sophie developed cataracs. She had problems seeing, but always knew us. She didn't care to be with other ferrets any longer. She really only liked Yukon and tolerated the rest. I could see she was getting ready to leave us and let her know that it was okay. She left us in her sleep May 21, 2003.
