MICROSOFT MAIL AND CC: MAIL ACCESS SOFTWARE TURNS ZAURUS INTO POCKET E-MAIL TERMINAL MAHWAH, N.J., January 1996 -- Sharp Electronics is targeting over 25 million LAN E-mail users in the United States with two Windows® software programs that transform the Zaurus Keyboard-enhanced PDA into a pocket E-mail terminal. Zaurus Access to Microsoft Mail® and Zaurus Access to cc:Mail® allow users to remotely send and retrieve E-mail using Zaurus. The new Zaurus Microsoft Mail or cc:Mail access software takes advantage of an existing Microsoft Mail® or Lotus cc:Mail® application running on a single or network PC, allowing individuals or workgroups of up to 20 users to send and retrieve E-mail, PC files and Zaurus data. "Anyone taking a notebook PC on a trip just to access E-mail from the road will realize Zaurus is the first practical, portable solution," said Mary Repke, director of marketing, Sharp Consumer Business Products Group. "Zaurus offers the convenience of a keyboard, yet still fits in a pocket, briefcase, or purse and weighs less than a pound," she added. To access E-mail, users simply download the Microsoft Mail or Lotus cc:Mail Address Book to their Zaurus and dial in to their modem-equipped PC or local area network server using the Zaurus CE-FM4 modem or a recommended PC Card modem. When communicating to the host PC, they can send or retrieve E-mail, reply to or forward messages, and even attach PC files and Zaurus data. In addition to communicating to the user's remote PC via modem, the new software also allows users to access E-mail locally, by infrared beam or cable. Available in both single- and multi-user versions, Zaurus Access to Microsoft Mail® and Zaurus Access to cc:Mail® at a minimum require a 386-based PC, Windows( 3.1, four megabytes of RAM and a Hayes®-compatible modem. They will be available from retailers and resellers in late April. Sharp anticipates that retailers will sell Zaurus Access to Microsoft Mail, single-user version (ZR-PG1), and multi-user version (ZR-PG1M) for about $49 and $199, respectively; and Zaurus Access to cc:Mail, single-user version (ZR-PG2), and multi-user versions (ZR-PG2M), for $49 and $199, respectively.
