This is the official transcript from the PILI-SDK conference, Please note that the transcript have been edited slightly to make it more readable, and I have removed a few stray conversations which had nothing to do with the Zaurus and the topic. (3-5,PATRICK DEHLINGER) Hello every body, welcome to Zaurus PILI conference ! (3-4,Tony P. Papa) How will the Joey SDK differ from PILI Patrick? (3-5,PATRICK DEHLINGER) The Joey SDK is a form based SDK, that is you can do some datacollection, but you are locked into a type of application. Pili is an Open Sdk, you can develop what ever you wante. the main difference also is that it should be more simple with a form based software (for this kind of soft) to develop. The PILI will alow you to do some Games but also some data colection (3-10,Andy Rathbone) Hello, folks! (3-4,Tony P. Papa) ? (3-5,PATRICK DEHLINGER) but for only datacolection, Joey sdk will be better (faster and easier to use from a pc), PILI is for the moment ony ASSEMBLER based, so more complicate to handle, (sorry seems that part of the answer did not get to the forum) Sorry every body, it's my first conferrence, hope to handle this correctly, next Bo. (3-8,Rupp Technology Cor) ? (Bo SYSOP) Go ahead Tony (3-4,Tony P. Papa) How is development going and would you give us an update of your schedule? RUPP you had a question (3-8,Rupp Technology Cor) Does that mean the coding must be done in assembly? If not, which ,languages? (3-6,Marcus Green) ? (3-5,PATRICK DEHLINGER) Yes the codding has to be done in low level language (assembler for the moment) but this as been enhanced by an extensive use of librry calls. The advantage is that you can handle more variety of applications, I hope to make PILI enhanced with some hi level language like basic or c (small c could be ok). next bo (Bo SYSOP)Marcus you are next (3-6,Marcus Green) I only know basic, so I should wait ? (3-6,Marcus Green) or can the assembly language be learned quickly? (3-11,Joseph S. Solin) ? (3-4,Tony P. Papa) ? (3-5,PATRICK DEHLINGER) Assembly language (the PILI one) should be simplest thna normal assembler, you should just need to know about 10 orders and how to call the internal library, I think you can handle it, just try. next Bo. (3-4,Tony P. Papa) Sorry to jump in but I gotta run - Patrick, will we be able t o create Shareware with PILI? (ie use free for 30 days and then expect a small fee ) or will all PILI created applications have to be freeware? Also what are your expected delivery dates and how will we be able to get a copy? (3-5,PATRICK DEHLINGER) Ok, Tony, I am strongly thinking about to handle a commercial way for PILI, for the moment you can only do freeware applications, but I WILL have a way to handle sharewares hand commercials whn I will release the final PILI (Bo SYSOP) I don't have any other on my list... Andy? (3-7,Jon Freivald) I joined late - my main question is pertaining to a reference made to a runtime -- will this require a runtime module be loaded to the Zaurus, or is that only on the PC where development is taking place? (3-9,Joseph W. Coffman) ? (3-5,PATRICK DEHLINGER) Jon, The runtime takes place in the Zaurus (arronud 256 kb) and the appli are downloaded as PC-files (max 999 applis). next Bo (Bo SYSOP) next is Andy (3-11,Joseph S. Solin) ? (3-7,Jon Freivald) Will the runtime be able to reside on an SRAM card? (3-10,Andy Rathbone) Can the PILI read/write into to SRAM cards so that an IBM (3-10,Andy Rathbone) PC can read/write 'em? (3-5,PATRICK DEHLINGER) Andy, the PILI can read right SRAM, but only in Zaurus format. I am thinking in a way to handle read/write with a PC (very complicate), next Bo. (3-10,Andy Rathbone) Thanks, Patrick (Bo SYSOP) Scott from RUPP is next (3-8,Rupp Technology Cor) You say users would need to know ~10 orders and the in ternal library calls. Will you have documentation of this and/or a sample program included ? Also, is this targeted only towards someone with some sort of programming experience or will an avg user be able to pick it up? (3-5,PATRICK DEHLINGER) Scott, I will provide documentations and samples. (3-8,Rupp Technology Cor) Great. Thanks for the info ok Joseph Coffmann is next (3-9,Joseph W. Coffman) What kind of cost will the commercial version of PILI be (if and when released), and will runtimes be permitted, or will there be royalties (Please US$ if possible). (3-5,PATRICK DEHLINGER) PILI will need a minimum knowledge for programming (assembler, even with 10 keyword is not so simple). But I think that we will find very quickely a small-c or even a basic. next Bo. (Bo SYSOP) Joseph Coffman did ask the next question (3-9,Joseph W. Coffman) Should I ask again? (Bo SYSOP) I think Patrick got it... Give him a moment (3-5,PATRICK DEHLINGER) Joseph, I am thinking on a solution, I will probapli do a licence mean, with some royalties, something arround 20$ or less. not fixed yet. next Bo. Joseph (3-9,Joseph W. Coffman) Thanks (Bo SYSOP) Solin is (3-7,Jon Freivald) ? (3-11,Joseph S. Solin) How much and when will the SDK be. (3-11,Joseph S. Solin) Will is include a pc based zaurus simulator for testing/debugging (3-5,PATRICK DEHLINGER) Joseph, The SDK will be Freeware for non commercial use. It will be release normaly next week. (3-11,Joseph S. Solin) simulator? (3-6,Marcus Green) ? (3-5,PATRICK DEHLINGER) Again, The simulator is not provided with the free sdk, but we have one for internal use, I didn't take a decision for releasing this simulator. (3-5,PATRICK DEHLINGER) next Bo, (Bo SYSOP) next is Jon freiwald (3-7,Jon Freivald) Will the runtime be able to be loaded to an SRAM card, or must it reside in main RAM? (3-5,PATRICK DEHLINGER) The runtime can be where you want (even on ROM) (Bo SYSOP) OK Marcus is next (3-6,Marcus Green) What's Palmware's main business? Do you plan to develop other commercial applications for the Zaurus in the future? (3-11,Joseph S. Solin) ? (3-5,PATRICK DEHLINGER) Palmware is developping on many Palmtops (nearly all of them), specialy for sales forces and the maintenance fields. Yes we plan to develop other applications for Zaurus. (Bo SYSOP) Everybody. We have a few minutes left and Patrick have asked that we go to CHAT for the reminder Please feel free to talk and ask Patrick any question. You do not have to ask my permission to takl. have fun (3-6,Marcus Green) :-) (3-11,Joseph S. Solin) patrick, is SHARP providing documation on built in zaurus apps to allow add-ons? (3-6,Marcus Green) Patrick, how many people are at Palmware? (3-5,PATRICK DEHLINGER) Palmware is 6 , with 5 developpers. (3-5,PATRICK DEHLINGER) No more questions ? (3-10,Andy Rathbone) Forgive me for asking this if somebody else already did -- but doesnthe PILI allow access to the Computer Link cord area of the Z5800? (3-11,Joseph S. Solin) Will sharp provide documation for built in apps to allow editing of them and add-on modules (3-5,PATRICK DEHLINGER) Andy, no for the moment, pili handle only regular serial link. (3-5,PATRICK DEHLINGER) Joseph, Sharp will not support in anyway pili, so it wil l not release internal documentation (many are under NDA). (3-11,Joseph S. Solin) Thanks (Bo SYSOP) Patrick several people have asked to see the alpha PILI I have can I lett them see it? (3-5,PATRICK DEHLINGER) Yes bo, but explain them that they HAVE TO MAKE BACKUP BEFORE DOWNLOADING PILI, and also you will have to send you b-day card :-). * note: the B-day card was a small pice of test code I recieved with the first PILI alpha on my B-day. (3-10,Andy Rathbone) This question might be dumb, too, but how hard would it be for somebody to write a PCMCIA-based driver using PILI? For example, could they write a driver for a PCMCIA-based CD-ROM drive? (Or is that too esoteric to even attempt?) (Bo SYSOP) good question Andy. (3-10,Andy Rathbone) Thanks, Bo! :-) (3-5,PATRICK DEHLINGER) Andy, no way. You can not write a pcmcia driver with PIL I am sorry, The fact is that PILI will be to slow to handle this, remember, even optimised, it still be a interpreted language. (3-6,Marcus Green) Patrick, do you think new Zaurus software (written with PILI) might work with the next Zaurus (so same OS) ? (3-5,PATRICK DEHLINGER) Marcus, Yes a PILI application will work on next Zaurus, also on every platform where PILI will exist (for the moment Wizard, dos, windows, warp!). (Bo SYSOP) Patrick will the final PILI support the ON key as a way to quit the run? (3-5,PATRICK DEHLINGER) Bo, Yes the final will support the break key. :-). also the beta 1. (3-6,Marcus Green) Can anyone recommend an area on CIS to learn about ASSEMBLY ? and Patrick, do you see the PDA mareket in Europe taking off soon, or might it never exist? (3-5,PATRICK DEHLINGER) I will help you Marcus. (3-6,Marcus Green) :-) merci (3-6,Marcus Green) Okay, Patrick, you said Palmware develops on many PDAs. Which PDA do YOU mainly use personally? (3-5,PATRICK DEHLINGER) The PDA market in Europe IS taking of, but more on the professional part (vertical with specil development), I think by 1 year we should have more horizontal market available (but remember PSION and HP, they work great in europe). (3-5,PATRICK DEHLINGER) Personaly I only use the Zaurus, after the newton after a wizard after ...? (3-6,Marcus Green) Yes, that's true about the Psion. (3-6,Marcus Green) Well, thanks to you the Zaurus market might be strengthened. (3-5,PATRICK DEHLINGER) I was saying Poquet computer then wizard the newton the Zaurus :-). (3-6,Marcus Green) Patrick, yes I've been through many of them (mostly Casio and Sharp) (3-10,Andy Rathbone) I'd better get going, but thanks for the conference, Patrick; we're looking forward to checking out your software when it arrives! (Bo SYSOP) Patrick... Is there any chance you could upload the PC part? (3-5,PATRICK DEHLINGER) Yes, I can upload the Pc part next week. (Bo SYSOP) Fantastic. I think that we are all very much looking forwared to see that (3-6,Marcus Green) So there are two parts? (Bo SYSOP) Patrick could you explain the components of the PILI system? (3-5,PATRICK DEHLINGER) Also I think I will be able to upload the beta 1. But only part of the documentation is translate. PIPI miss again the my by-by speach (3-6,Marcus Green) Patrick, Franch is fine :-) (3-5,PATRICK DEHLINGER) If someone want the alpha, just request it from me or bo , I will send-it to you. (Bo SYSOP) Patrick could you wrie a small test code for the PILI other than my B-day card (3-5,PATRICK DEHLINGER) OK, Bo, I will write a better sample, a graphic demo is OK ? (Bo SYSOP) Cool (Bo SYSOP) Patrick what happens if you hav several codes in PCfiles I mean more than one can the PILI find the right one? Or will it ask which one you like to run? (3-5,PATRICK DEHLINGER) Yes you can chain application, that was an answer I had send, but didn't appear in the forum.... PILI can handle as much as 999 applications in the PC-file area I am was telling that for example you can make an application compose with 2 or 3 sources and chain them with an FNCALL opcode like chain 'PILI-001' and the PILI-001 chain to PILI-MAIN and so one though It is like the BASIC Chain order to translate controle to other application stuff. (Bo SYSOP) Ahhh. I did see that answer, but I did not understand what you did mean. This is the end of the transcript.
