Server-Based Software Offers Zaurus Users Secure Access to E-mail
From LANs Running Microsoft ExchangeÆ or Microsoft MailÆ
MAHWAH, N.J. -- For the first time, a solution is available for traveling executives who carry Sharp Electronics Corporation's Zaurus and need secure access to Microsoft ExchangeÆ and Microsoft MailÆ E-mail. Pygmy Computer Systems announces Zaurus Mail Server (ZMS), Windows NT 4.0Æ server-based software that allows Zaurus users to send and retrieve password-protected Microsoft Exchange and Microsoft Mail messages to and from an office LAN.
Zaurus Mail Server software works with the built-in Zaurus mail client. By supporting up to 64 modems per server, it allows companies to economically deploy a modem pool to give multiple users simultaneous E-mail access. The software, which works with the ZR-5800, ZR-5700, ZR-5000 and ZR-3000, is compatible with LANs running Windows 3.1Æ, WindowsÆ 95 or Windows NTÆ.
"For the first time, Zaurus Mail Server provides a way for users to carry a small, lightweight, inexpensive mobile device that offers secure access to Microsoft Exchange and Microsoft Mail," says Mary Repke, director of marketing, Consumer Business Products Group, Sharp Electronics Corporation. "It lets multiple corporate Zaurus users simultaneously keep in touch with the office."
"Zaurus Mail Server allows a corporate MIS director to control E-mail access for a large number of remote Zaurus users within a single server," says Pygmy President Mark Geigel. "This avoids thorny security and reliability issues."
Ron Lockhart, director of workstation support and training for CMP Media, the Manhasset, N.Y.-based publisher of more than a dozen computer-industry trade publications, believes Zaurus Mail Server will offer significant savings and convenience for the company's mobile employees. About 60 percent of CMP's 2,000 employees who use computers are mobile. Lockhart estimates buying a Zaurus instead of a notebook PC would save the company roughly $5,000 per employee.
"If only 20 percent of our workers turn in a notebook PC for a Zaurus, that would represent a $1.2 million savings," Lockhart says. "Zaurus Mail Server will result in a significant advance for the use of the Zaurus at CMP. Many of our employees use notebook PCs solely to send and retrieve E-Mail. With Zaurus Mail Server, the company can save money and our employees can get to their E-mail on the road with a lightweight hand-held device."
Zaurus Mail Server provides an extra layer of security for Microsoft Exchange users by requiring them to log on with a user ID and a password to gain E-mail access, instead of the "profile" log-on used by Microsoft Exchange.
Zaurus Mail Server software will be priced at $2,995 for the "Pro" version, which supports 150 users, plus a $19.95-per-user licensing fee for additional users. A "Lite" version of ZMS which supports up to 20 users is available for $399.
