Microsoft Mail and cc:Mail Access Software ShipsTurning Zaurus Into a Pocket-Sized E-mail Terminal NEW YORK, June 18, 1996 -- Sharp Electronics is now shipping two Windows-based applications, Zaurus Access to Microsoft Mail and Zaurus Access to cc:Mail, that transform the Zaurus keyboard-enhanced PDA into a pocket-sized portable E-mail terminal. The applications, each available in single- and multi-user versions, let Zaurus users send and retrieve E-mail messages from remote locations by telephone, or locally using infrared or cable links. Multi-user versions of the applications allow individuals or workgroups with up to 20 members to send and retrieve E-mail, PC files and Zaurus data via a single dedicated PC running Windows and either Microsoft Mail or cc:Mail. "Anyone taking a notebook PC on a trip just to access E-mail from the road will realize Zaurus is a much more practical, portable solution," says Mary Repke, director of marketing, Sharp Consumer Business Products Group. "Zaurus offers the convenience of a keyboard, yet it still fits in a pocket, briefcase or purse, and it weighs less than a pound." All versions of the software let users download Microsoft Mail or cc:Mail address books into Zaurus via infrared or cable links, and are compatible with ZR-5800 and ZR-5700 series units. The software interacts with the Message application already resident in Zaurus, and therefore does not require users to download any additional applications into the K-PDA. To use single- or multi-user versions of either application, users simply load it onto a 386 or faster PC running Windows 3.1 or higher with at least 4MBytes of RAM. The PC must be attached to a Hayes-compatible modem, and must have access to a network running Microsoft Mail or cc:Mail. The Zaurus must be used with a CE-FM4 fax modem or a recommended PC Card fax modem for remote telephone access. For local E-mail access, PCs running any version of the application must be equipped with a linking cable or a CE-IR4 or recommended infrared transceiver. Additional software features include letting Zaurus users reply to or forward E-mail messages, and allowing them to log all activity that occurs via the applications. The applications let users view attached Text and RTF files within Zaurus, and stores other E-mail attachments in the unit's PC files area. Suggested retail prices for single-user versions of Zaurus Access to Microsoft Mail (ZR-PG1) and Zaurus Access to cc:Mail (ZR-PG2) are $79. Suggested retail prices for multi-user versions of Zaurus Access to Microsoft Mail (ZR-PG1M) and Zaurus Access to cc:Mail (ZR-PG2M) are $239.
