How to get files from a PC to a Zaurus ---------- With the recent leap in Zaurus users due to the new ZR5800FX, there has been a lot of questions about how to move files back and forth between a PC and a Zaurus. This files attempts to explain that. While I address PC communicationa, the same principles hold true for those of you using a Mac. ---------- THIS IS NOT ABOUT BACKUPS. TO MAKE ZAURUS BACKUPS YOU NEED ONE OF THE FOLLOWING: SHARP DATA EXCHANGE UTILITY (DEU) INTELLINK SOFTWARE RUPPLINK SOFTWARE AN APPROVED/APPROPRIATRE MEMORY CARD. ---------- This help file is an explanation of alternative to moving text files, RTF files, Excel 4.0 spreadsheets (.XLS), folders (we've pseudo-standardized on .ZRF to identify these), and other PC files you might wish to transfer through your Zaurus. ---------- First off, if you have the Data Exchange Utility, just hook them up and Import the file into PCFILES. Once there, you can tell the Zaurus to convert it to documents and it should work just fine. The Data Exchange Utility works fine to move all thesae files. ---------- If you don't have the DEU, or are trying to transfer files with someone else's PC, the following works, but is NOT for the faint of heart or PC novice (without some practice). Here's a step by step, assuming I don't miss any steps: 1) Set up a new entry in the Zaurus terminal. You don't need to have a modem for this to work. My entry is called LINK. Under Modem asetting, makes sure this entry is set to 15-Pin (the cable). Under Dial Settings, set it for 9600 baud, N-8-1. The other stuff can stay at the defaults. LEAVE THE NUMBER FIELD BLANK. 2) Connect the link cable between the Zaurus and the PC. Assuming the Windows terminal program, set up a terminal session at 9600-N-8-1 to whatever Com port the link cable is connected to. 3) In the Zaurus, start the LINK entry. Since there's no number to dial, the Zaurus and PC are now connected at 9600 baud, and Xmodem protocol works fine. 4) In the Zaurus, select Download Xmodem to PCFiles. Put whatever you like in the name fields when prompted. 5) On the PC, in the already running and connected terminal session, click on Transfers, Send Binary File, and "upload" the file from your PC into the Zaurus. When it's all done, quit both terminal sessions and un hook everything. The folder should now be in PC Files and able to be converted. I say SHOULD. I think I've done this with folders. I know I've done it with spreadsheets, RTF files, and assorted other things. I hope this makes sense and helps get you in the right direction. I don 't use the Windos terminal, but it's the best way I can explain. The process works with any PC communications program. Good luck! Ken Camp 76430,3550
