^1^^R^ PRINTING FROM THE ZAURUS ^N^

The Zaurus can print to almost any printer you
might come across.

It is important to note that unlike a PC or Mac the
Zaurus do list most printers in the ^:pdriver=printer driver^
index. You may have to be a little creative.

You can either connect via a cable or a IRDA device.

The advantage of a IRDA device is that it does not
clutter your desk, and all you have to do when you
want to print a document is to point your Zaurus
toward the IRDA device and press ^B^2nd+SEND^N^
This works like pressing control+P on a PC.

^Lpdriver^

The Zaurus Printer options can be accessed from
almost any application.

To set up the driver tap on the documents menu and
select the ^B^SEND^N^ button, then select ^B^PRINT....^N^ and
use the ^B^PRINTER EMULATION^N^ to select the model of your
printer, also choose whether you are using cut pape or
continous feed paper. You also need to choose ^B^CABLE^N^ or
^B^WIRELESS^N^ This depends on what hardware you have for
your Zaurus

Most printers support several printer drivers, you may
want to experiment with different printer drivers,
remember your printer have to set to the same driver as
your Zaurus.^I^
* Some new printers have build in IRDA recievers, in that
case, you can naturally use the ^B^Wireless^N^ option.^N^

France it is a completely free software.

If you would like to create your own applications for

all you need is a PC or a Mac with SoftDOS.

Patrick is behind the PILI freeware, and welcomes
any questions about how to create new applications.

The PILI freeware is a language interpreter which
is installed by the user on the Zaurus platform,
software can then be written using a PC based
^B^freeware SDK.^N^

The PILI was written using the official SHARP Zaurus
SDK, and the PILI "perform" the instructions written
on the PC on the Zaurus.

^B^PILI^N^ is 100% compattible with the Zaurus platform,
and is programable with only limited programing
experience. If you have any problems creating your
application, ask in the Zaurus forum on CompuServe.

^Lmodem^

The Zaurus offers two different modem solutions.

^:CE-FM4=SHARP's CE-FM4^ and ^:PCmodem=PCMCIA card modem^

Each of these Modems offers different advantages
Sharp offer the CE-FM4 bundled with the Zaurus
The bundled models are called ZR5000FX, ZR5700FX
and ZR5800FX, Non FX models do not come with a
modem.

^LCE-FM4^
       ^R^^B^SHARP's CE-FM4 "sidecar" modem^N^

This cool little modem mounts to the side of your
Zaurus, it only transmits data at 2400 bps and
FAX at 9600 bps.
But there is a few things in it's favor...

^B^A. ^N^The build in CompuServe application does not
run much faster when using a PCMCIA modem.

^B^B.^N^ It last for as much as 2 hours online on a set of
AA batteries. This is a great feature anythime you are
not next to a battery outlet or a power adaptor.

^B^C^N^ This modem is 100% compattible with
all applications in the Zaurus, and you do
not have to worry about any init strings.
Just plug it in and play...

^48-17^ ^:modem="@back"^
^eop^.

^LPCmodem^

The ZR5700 and the ZR5700 both can power a ^B^PCMCIA^N^
modem from the internal batteries, but you only get
about 20 minutes of online time from a set.
However if you are planing to use terminal often,
need the more compact size of the Zaurus with a
internal modem, or want to connect via a ^B^CELL phone^N^
a PCcard modem may be the hot ticket..
** Using the ^:emul=terminal^ emulation you can^B^ enjoy^N^
of the higher speed offered by a PCMCIA modem.

Most 28.8 modems draw more power than 14.4
modems, because of this the Zaurus will generally
not power a 28.8 card. Also the Zaurus software
don't support speeds higher than 14.4
Take advantage of this, and buy a cheap 14.4 modem
rather than an much more expencive 28.8 card.

Terminal Emulation.....

This scarry term have been around for a long time,
and it gives you a clean and very fast interface to
^B^CompuServe^N^, the ^B^internet^N^, and ^B^ BBS^N^'s.

The cool thing is that it is fast and that almost any
computer can besccesed this way....

^B^However^N^ there is a pretty steep learning curve.

Still that being said, ^B^GO FOR IT....^N^ it is very
^B^satisfying^N^ to master the terminal interface.

There is a great CompuServe software for the Zaurus
it is called the CCZ (CompuServe Companion for the
Zaurus), it is build into the ZR3000, ZR5700, and

seperately from a mail order company.

You can use the Zaurus on the internet in several
ways, at this point you have to use the terminal
emulation and either PINE or LYNX from your ISP.
There is several files in the Sharp Zaurus library
on CompuServe, ^B^GO ZAURUS^N^ documenting how to
connect to and surf the internet using your Zaurus.

^B^RUPP tecnology^N^ offers ^B^Z-m@il^N^ for the Zaurus, this
is a add-on software which allows you to send and
recieve internet e-mail and binary files using the
mime encoding. The software is a POP3 client.
You can get Z-m@il from RUPP @ 800-844-7775.

This is a guide for how to use the Zaurus to
partcipate in online conferences.

You can use any Zaurus to participate in a online
conference on CompuServe, follow these steps
to succeed.
  ^B^
1. TERMINAL. ^N^^4^ You have to have a terminal setup
for CompuServe, this is a requirement for
connectiong to CompuServe. If you have not created
a terminal setting for CompuServe yet, you will
need to open the SETUP menu for any terminal in
the terminal index. Enter CompuServe as the name,
and your local access number in the number box,
then select databits=7 parity=even stopbits=1
also tap on the modem screen and select the modem
port and speed you want to use. do not change any
thing else.
   ^B^
2. CONNECT. ^N^^4^ Tap twice on the terminal you have
prepared, this will cause it to log on. after the
modem handshake you will see a blank screen, wait
3 sec. then press ENTER once, CompuServe will now
ask you for a host name? Type CIS and press ENTER,
now you will get prompted for your user id, enter
your user id and predd ENTER, next prompt is for
your password, enter that and press ENTER.

3. CompuServe.^N^^4^ After a short pause you will see
the top menu of CompuServe, when you see the OK
prompt, enter GO ZAURUS and press ENTER, this will
bring you to the forum.
   ^B^
4. FORUM.^N^^4^ After you enter the forum press ENTER
once, this will bring up the forum menu, select
"conferencing" by entering 4 and pressing ENTER,
then select the room you want to be in, enter the
number and press ENTER again.

CompuServe will ask you "What's your name" at this
point enter your first and last name and press
ENTER. The forum rules do not permit "screen handles"
and the SYSOP in the conference will ask you to
change from a "screen handle" to your name.
  ^B^
5. CONFERENCE.^N^^4^ When you are inside the conference
room you can send a message by typing it into the
screen, the message will not be send until you
press ENTER. There is a few commands which can
help you, one is to type /use this will show you
are in the forum, when you want to leave the forum
you have to type /exit.

One important thing to remember is to select SETUP
from the Zaurus menu and set the screen to
"line-wrap". if you already have done this you
don't have to do it now.
 ^B^
6. PROTOCOL.^N^^4^ Generally unless other-whise have
been announced we try to use a somewhat controlled
conference protocol. The reason is that by
makeing life easyer for the speaker we can all get
more answers, which really is why we are there.
When you want to ask a question, type a "?" and
press ENTER this will make the SYSOP put you on
the list, then start typing your question, make
sure that you make it short and clear, do not press
ENTER until the SYSOP ask you to post your question.
This will leave the question in your Zaurus or
computer until it is time to ask it. Even though
you will see your text line being broken up by
the messages from other people, don't worry, when
you press ENTER *all* of your question will be send.

At the end of the conference you will see the format
becomming somewhat looser, that means kick back and
chat as you please. ;-)

7. TRANSCRIPT.^N^^4^ As you enter the forum it is a
good idea to tap on the UP/DN menu on your Zaurus
screen, select "download file ASCII" this will
capture what goes on durring the conference, so
that you can read it later while relaxing. This
is a simple way to capture a transcript, and
makes it less important to carefully read every
line of text which flashes over the screen,
because you can read it all later. If the file
size grows larger than 16k your Zaurus will ask
you for a file name, call it transcript. otherwise
it will not ask you until you press the LOG OFF
button, an that point you have to name the file,
if you press cancle it will be deleted.
