By Bo Lorentzen. This file is written to answer some of the questions related to using the Zaurus on-line on CompuServe. It is assumed that you already have read the CIS/SHARP file by Jeff Goldman, found in LIB.9, and taken the steps suggested therein. If not, you may benefit from downloading it before you start. Q: When I use XMODEM for up-load, parts of the message are missing. What is wrong? A: XMODEM was created for small computers, not giants like CompuServe, and in order for it to work several assumptions have been made. It was created for 8N1 and assumes that you are using this setting. If not, you will still have a successful transmission, but may loose some of the end of your message. I have found two fixes; either add approximately. 75 blank characters (spaces) to your message, or change your setup to 8N1. Together with the 8N1 setting, you will have to also change the permanent settings (this will NOT affect the performance of your PC or Mac CIM) from ASCII to LATIN 1. To change this type GO PROFILE, then select the display settings. *If your Zaurus is not already set to 8N1, you will have to change that in the configuration when you select LATIN 1. Q: Every time I read a document or a news story, it scrolls off the page before I can read it. A: GO PROFILE, select CHANGE PERMANENT SETTINGS, then DISPLAY OPTIONS, here choose PAGED DISPLAY = YES. Your display will now stop after each page, and you get the next page by sending a CR. (Press ENTER.). Q: How do I reply to messages? A: Simply type REP (this will give you a text editor,) type your message, press ENTER before the cursor goes off your screen. Keep typing until you are done, then type /EXIT to end the message. You will now get a menu for the message, select 1 to post the message on the board, and you will be returned to where you were when you started. Remember it is considered rude to use uppercase letters in your messages, other than where it is appropriate! If you like to read the message before the one you are reading, type PARENT, or if you like to read the first message in a thread, type ROOT. To just read the new messages, go into the message section, and select the "new messages" menu. it will let you read all off them without selecting them one at a time. Q: When I upload messages, it takes forever. What am I doing wrong? A: Most likely nothing. This is another problem of the XMODEM protocol. Because XMODEM assumes that it is connected to another microcomputer, it expects to receive a ACK message from the receiving computer within about one second after it has sent a block of information (128k). Like you probably have noticed, it is rather common with more than a one second wait on CompuServe, this is because we are not alone there, (one of the assumptions of XMODEM). This causes the Zaurus to believe that, for some reason, the block was not received and it retransmits the block until it receives a ACK signal, after which it will go on to the next block. Unfortunately, the Zaurus doesn't, at this moment, offer any options to change the wait setting of the XMODEM protocol. In some areas, you may be able to cut the upload time in half by setting the modem speed to 300 bps. instead of 2400 bps. I use 300 bps. to upload mail and 2400 bps. for all other functions. Q: When I connect with *ZAURUS added to my user ID after I set the TER DEF. setting, my Zaurus locks up while logging on? A: You most likely have used the LOGOFF button on the terminal menu when you left CompuServe after setting the TER DEF. Don't do that. Instead when you want to leave, always type OFF at any prompt line. This will save your settings and disconnect you from CompuServe; wait until you see the NO CARRIER message, then press the LOGOFF button! Q: When I connect my auto log stops because CompuServe asks for Pwor: instead of Password, what is happening? A: Some of your TER DEF settings are conflicting with your permanent setting, this may happen after you have changed to LATIN-1. Enter the TER DEF and check the parity setting; you probably have set it to EVEN, if so, change it to ZERO. That usually does the trick (This is assuming that your Zaurus is set to log on at 8N1. If you log on at 7E1, and then change the Zaurus setting after logging on, the parity needs to be set to EVEN.) Q: How can I log on to CompuServe in the 8 bits setting, without having to manually change the Zaurus terminal settings after each time I log on? A: By using a auto log script written to recognize the garbage characters that appear on your screen when logging on in 8N1. Copy this script to your Auto Log. W5 R^C SD:á RYour User ID*ZAURUS| SPassword: RYour+Password| When you are done your auto log should look like this: Q: How can I keep track of all my addresses on the Zaurus? A: Use the Word feature (see page 90 in the Zaurus manual) and set each entry up like this: Peter Nielsen [73543,2401] Also, make an entry for your own name and User ID. Then, when CompuServe prompts you for the recipient, press the WORD button, highlight the recipient, and press ENTER. After the address appears on CompuServe, press ENTER again, and repeat the procedure when prompted for your name and User ID. Q: What is the difference between uploading a folder and uploading text? A: The folder is uploaded in the Zaurus format, which is why you can include scrapbook pictures in the text. However, you can only send a folder to another Zaurus. The folder also keeps the original formatting. When you up load a folder to CompuServe, choose XMODEM then Binary. Text uploads only give you the text itself! You can keep your format when uploading a text file, if you use binary. The advantage to this is that you can send a file including your format, with BOLD, Underline, and Italic. However, it is considered rude to send e-mail as binary, and many people will not receive it. Only send binary messages/files to people who are expecting them! I identify these binary files to other Zaurus users by typing ZR.BIN FOLDER in the subject field. This informs the recipient to download the file into a Zaurus folder. Prepare the document you want to send by filing it in the out folder. You can also send any other folder, it will include ALL entries in that folder. Q: How do I find another member on CompuServe? A: Type GO DIRECTORY then follow the instructions. Enter as much information as you can. Q: Is there a "talk" feature, I can use with the Zaurus? A: Yes. When you enter a forum, type USE and you will get a list of who is currently in the forum. The first # in that list is the job#, this is the # CompuServe uses to keep track of members in the forum. To send a message to another user, use the SEN command + the Job# of the user you want to contact. Type like this: SEN 1 Hi Bo how is life? Then press ENTER to send the message. The SEN and Job # goes in front of each line you send. * Notice how the reply appeared between the prompt and the next message to be sent. Don't let that confuse you. Remember where you are, finish your message, then press ENTER to send it. The Job number of the person writing to you appears after the two ;; If you receive a message from someone, use that number for your reply. Q: Can I enter the conference room, and the CB talk forum, with my Zaurus? A: Yes. When you get ready to enter, change your Zaurus SETUP to wrap text. When you do that, you have to use the arrow keys to get to the bottom of your screen... Now you are ready. There are a few commands to remember, I suggest that you make a index card with them for reference while you are online. /EXIT To leave the room. /MON # To monitor room #... /JOIN, To join a private group when invited. /USE To list who is in the forum. /WHO More info on the last writer. /SQUELS # Use Job3 from USE to tune out a user. /GO Any GO command. (leave the room) Remember that, as long as you are inside the room, ALL comands must have a / as the FIRST character of that line! Make sure you have sent your last message before you type any command! * For more information see Don Maui's file in the practice forum lib.1 (GO PRACTICE) Q: How can I send appointment updates to another Zaurus User? A: Make the appointments on your Zaurus, then file them in a folder, and e-mail the folder to the other user. You can also do this with TO DO's, CONTACTS, NOTES, SCRAPBOOK, and OUTLINE entries. Q: What do you mean: change the settings from 7E1 to 8N1? A: Open the terminal menu and highlight the settings you want to change then press SETUP, choose DIAL, and change the setting to 8N1, remember what it use to be like, you may have to set it back. You can also make this change while online. In that case the change will not be permanent! Online changes will only be needed if you go into an area of CompuServe that requires 8N1, if you have changed your permanent setting to LATIN-1, and logged on using your old setting and script * (see the 8N1 script). 8N1 setting notice that Data bits and parity have been set to 8 and None. Q: What is the "*ZAURUS" thing all about anyway? A: The *ZAURUS added to your User ID tells CompuServe to change the terminal settings to fit your needs. That's why you specified a TER DEF setting for your Zaurus, it tells CompuServe that you are using your Zaurus instead of your home PC (or Mac) and changes the terminal setting to match the needs of your Zaurus. Of couse if you only use your Zaurus when on-line, you don't have to be concerned about this at all! Q: I get confused when I try to create the TER DEF setting and all of a sudden I have text all over the screen. A: Just take your time, prepare a piece of paper with the information you need to enter. There are only three important things to set: terminal type = TTY, HORisontal = 54, and VERtical = 24. Log-on manually then at the first prompt type PRO when you see the OK! prompt, type TER DEF ZAURUS/RATE:ANY/PROMPT Now you will get a series of questions. Don't panic when you can't see all of the line, you don't have to, all you need to see is to the left For each question, press ENTER to leave the setting the way it was. When you get to HORI, Terminal type, and VERT, enter the settings for your Zaurus. When you get to the end, you will again see the OK! prompt Type GO MAIL (or any other GO command), then at the next prompt type OFF, This will save your settings (Always type OFF when you leave). After that, press the LOGOFF button to get back to the Terminal menu. Q: Explain how to set the LATIN 1. setting. A: GO PROFILE, select CHANGE PERMANENT SETTINGS, then DISPLAY OPTIONS, select option 7 CHARACTER SET, and set it to LATIN 1. After making this selection, you will get a warning that your connection will be changed to 8N1. Then type EXIT at the next prompt to leave. You will be prompted to confirm. Select 1 to confirm. Remember to type OFF before you disconect from CompuServe, this will save your settings.
