Eric

>>My girl Joyce told me you called when I called her from Bkk. Do call again
when you visit Singapore.<<

Yeah, pleasant lass. It was actually quite embarrassing - she kind of
insisted that she should call you on your roaming mobile to let you know, and
I kind of insisted that she will do no such thing.....B-) I called on the off
chance that you might have changed your schedule.

>>I cannot access from Bkk although CServe in theory have connection thru
Infonet in Bkk.
I used infonet when I am in Singapore....occasionally it has problems
establishing the connection:

* if using the the terminal to dial, I will never get the # sign after
<CR><CR>
* OK if using terminal and manual dial (ie ATDTX,XXXXXX)
* via CCZ, the first attempt upon arrival always fail (don't ask me why)

>>Firstly the speed is only 2400bps & you pay usd10 per hour for Infonet.I
may get 4 free hours per month from CServe but to get 4 hours of CServe I have
to pay usd40 to connect thru Infonet & at 2400bps, downloading will cost a
bomb. Does CServe get a profit from Infonet for using 2400?<<

This is a big problem, at the moment it is acceptable because I only use the
Z1/CE-FM4 to connect, but I can understand the frustration if you are using a
laptop with a 24.4 modem.... Network charges are expensive in Asia. So the
infonet access in Bkk is only 300-2400? no 9600?

>>I think I may switch to roaming internet services which is now being started
between Hong Kong, China, Japan, USA etc. I am losing my patience with CServe
& their slow Infonet services in Asia. CServe is only good in Europe & USA.<<

CIS still works for me....it's more 'no frills', esp now that I have the CCZ
(and I don't pick up the tab for CIS <g>).

Until next time....
Calvin

Hi Kable,

The usd10 per hr for access via Infonet in Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia is a
standard rate imposed on all CompuServe users. At least in Singapore &
Indonesia it is 9600. In Thailand it is a shocking 2400! It is faster &
cheaper for me to access my email via Hong Kong whilst I am in Bangkok. As for
forums, forget it - it is just too expensive. As soon as the various Asean
countries uses roaming Internet ( with linkages to China & USA ! ) CompuServe
will lose a big section of the Far East market. I too suspect CompuServe
getting a share of profits from Infonet. If our suspicions are correct, it is
a rather short sighted policy!

All the best your experiments on the Autopilot - please keep us informed.

Hi Kable,

Yes, I do not understand why CServe continued to work with Infonet whose max
speed in some countries is only 2400. In all coutries where Infonet is being
used the max is 9600bps. If Cserve 4 hrs free service includes Infonet, I
really would not mind but the Infonet is always charged additional!

Hi Calvin

I used infonet when I am in Singapore....occasionally it has problems
establishing the connection:

Have been complaining to Cserve as regards poor connections thru expensive &
getting very polite & diplomatic replies:-).

>>.. I don't pick up the tab for CIS << Good for you :-).

Do call again when you are in town.

YES. If the hotel is phone system is digital you can fry your modem instantly.
Most (!) hotels in Asia are not so sophisticated and prefer to use the
cheapest analog phones in the room (perhaps to reduce theft losses, I don't
know). There are adapters available to allow connection to digital phones (not
such a big deal since the handset/microphone is analogue anyway). I have a
Panasonic key-phone system in my office which is a no-no for modem
connections.
I have been lucky (so far) and not had any hotel phone difficulty although I
did hedge my bet a time or two using an old PCMCIA modem to connect before
risking the MWAVE internal.
Another note - the wiring can sometimes be reversed (there are only two wires
so it is not difficult to sort out) so I carry a phone line tester (couple
bucks in any electronics store) and some straight and reverse adapters to sort
out switched connections. Phones don't seem to mind but modems can be more
sensitive. Also carry an RJ-11 connector with wires and alagater clips in case
minor engineering is required to get connected. It's always better to be
prepared.

No, X rays do not harm your Zaurus. I carry my Zaurus with the ACT Modem
Cable, plus an AIWA Portable modem to S.E. Asian Countries. CIS works well,
except infonet World is kind of slow.

I know the Infonet World Script of the CIS companion works in countries like
Malaysia, Indonesia, and Singapore. Does anyone know whether the script
works in Europe, Taiwan, or other countries
requiring Infonet Connections ?
I hope Sharp will come up with the SCITOR script upgrade soon.
I tested the ACT Modem cable in Malaysia recently, using an AIWA 14,400
portable modem. The setup was simply perfect.
