Ok, now I'm a bit frustrated.

I was always wondering what Calvin Wong, Global Traveller that he is, was
compaining about when he asked for more "network scripts" for the CompuServe
Companion for Zaurus. NOW I KNOW.

I'm heading to Beijing Monday and looked up access numbers. The ONLY number
in all of China is Beijing (thank goodness), but it's the SCITOR network. CCZ
doesn't support an automated login on that net!

That means ASCII mode, if it will work, or lugging my laptop into the PRC,
something I don't relish explaining in customs. "Yes, sir, I'm here for
tourism, with my wife and 2 young daughters. Yes, sir, I need to communicate
with the rest of the (free) world on my laptop. No sir, I'm not trying to
undermine your wonderful social and political sturcture in the PRC. Yes sir,
I am simply keeping in touch with my company, a software house that enables
broadcasters around the (free) world to broadcast according to the principle
of freedom of speech. No sir, I do not believe in spreading freedom of speech
here in the PRC..."

Anyway --

1) Is there a download-able SCITOR script that I can use with my CCZ?

2) If not, is ASCII mode still a viable option for e-mail, quotes and the
following forums: PALMB, BPFORUM and MOTORCYCLE? (I guess I'll stay out of
Forbes Online while in the PRC.)

3) When will more scripts be available for the CCZ???

>> I got the following information YESTERDAY from Roger Friedenthal and it may
be just what you are looking for:- <<

I downloaded it into my Z last night while looking up access numbers. Thanks
to you and Roger anyway.

>> I suggest you go for the only Compuserve node first and only resort to
Terminal if absolutely essential. <<

The only NODE in Beijing is SCITOR. The CIS network doesn't reach there.
Say, does anyone know what kind of monitoring the PRC does on data comm?

>> Regarding your hypothetical conversation...about halfway through that
paragraph you'd be pulled into a room, never to be seen again. B-) Seriously,
though, they are not that bad, you shouldn't have problem going in and out of
customs....thousands of people go in and out of the PRC with laptops etc each
day - there is a reason why there is a SCITOR node in the PRC, and it is not
because customs wants to confiscate obsolete laptops.B-) <<

Well, I never had that conversation and [therefore] never got to see that
room. Worse, I didn't disappear! I'm baaaccckkk. :-)>

The Beijing Customs folks were a lot less attentive than I anticipated. I
went to the Red Channel first, she looked at the form that itemized all my
gadgets (Laptop and Z included), and said "You have nothing to declare. Got
to the Green Channel. Cool! They didn't even x-ray my bag like they were
doing to others.

Yes, I took the laptop after all. It turns out that SCITOR is US$10 per hour
of connect time, and the phone system left a lot to be desired as far as
datacomm goes. And a 9600bps connection tended to stay connected longer than
a 2400 or 4800 one. In fact, the acoustic coupler was a more reliable
connection than a wire directly into the modem -- go figure. SCITOR would
connect on 1 out of every 6 or so tries, so when I did get connected, it paid
to download faster.

All in all, I am glad I had the laptop, especially since the home office sent
two 1.1mb files to me while in Beijing. My Z1 would have up and died!

BTW, Calvin, you've got a scanner, right? I've got something I'd like to
upload to the forum once I get the film developed... (Mysterious Grin>.

I have heard that before, I wonder if a acoustic coubler might modulate
"harder" and therefore comunicate better over a poor line. I don't know but I
sure would like to know what causes it, I have even had that experience here
in the USA, when trying to connect from out of nowhere to a remote node. <g>

Regarding power supply, China is 220v and 50HZ. What computer do you have? All
the ThinkPads I have seen (I have 760CD) have universal power supply. The wall
socket may require an adapter and although China has a standard (three flats
with bottom two on an angle, same as Australia) it is rarely followed so you
will have to see what you are stuck with.
Phone sockets are generally RJ-11 (US standard) unless they are hotel, hard
wired phones. I use standard cable and Mwave modem in China without
difficulty (no special DDA). I generally have better luck adding X3 to the
modem setup string so it will not look for a dial tone.
If you are connecting to CompuServe in Beijing the number is 6512-7609 and use
the SCITOR network connection in WinCIM or NavCIS or whatever you are using to
get on Compuserve. There are Internet connections but unless you have planned
well in advance or you have a friend with a connection they can take a month
to set up.
I live in Beijing so I cannot advise you on Manila conditions.
