I am now in Finland and cannot log on as the PABX has a *morse* dial tone.
They say I need to turn off the dial tone detect. I see how you do that with
fax, but not with terminal mode????

TIA

I was just in Finland a couple of weeks ago and had a heck of a time finding a
phone jack that wasn't plugged into a digital PBX (I'm paranoid about frying
my modem with the higher voltages that digital PBXs often use).

Anyway, once I found a real "normal" line, things worked great when I disabled
my dial-tone detection with the modem (init) string:
  ATX1
If you want to disable both dial-tone and busy signal detection, use:
  ATX3

(Note wrt what Bo suggested -- I was able to dial just fine using the normal
(US) touch-tones (Line type = Tone, not Pulse), so my bet is so will you with
either the ATX1 or ATX3 above)

Good luck,
Armand

PS -- Boy was Finland way over-regulated wrt their phone system; apparently
ISDN modems cost over $2000 (US) there! Also, people on the street and in
stores looked at me like I was crazy when I asked around to try to find the
location of an "Internet cafe"!
