I live in Germany and have been on-line with my Z1all over this country and in
Italy as well, by means of the sidecar modem, a Motorola PCMCIA card and a GSM
card connected to a GSM digital phone. France will be no problem. Ditto,
Slovenia, although you might have to dial out to the CompuServe node in Munich
to get on line from Slovenia, unless there is now a node there. That is easy
to check. You should have no problems. Buy an adaptor for your U.S. RJ11
phone jack in an electronic store. Be prepared to unplug hotel phones from
the wall or at the phone set (you won't find many hotels with data port
phones). Don't forget to enter the hotel's outside line access number
(usually 0 in Germany) in your dialing string. Also don't forget to GO PHONES
before you leave and store in your Z the CompuServe access numbers in the
countries and cities where you will be travelling. Saves fumbling around once
you get there. Try visiting the country forums and forum libraries for your
proposed countries in CompuServe. You will often find good info in those
forums about getting on line. The problem is not unique to Z users. I know
that is true of Italy. I used a file from the forum library there before
travelling to Italy.

I live in England and have used both a ZR-5000 and currently a ZR-5800 both
with 3 types of modems ... a normal external modem, A PCMCIA modem and the
Sharp Sidecar modem (CE-FM4).

I have successfully and with no problem faxed & e-mailed to my hearts content.

I have not received faxes via any method on my Zaurii .... This is as yet not
possible.

In England we now have a local access phone number that works wherever you are
in England ... 0845 080 1000

If I can answer any more questions please don't hesitate to ask.

Along with the other suggestions check into the TRAVEL forum as well as the
specific country forum like FRANCE. Ask in them how to get on Compuserve. Also
GO PHONES & then international & get the local numbers. Although expensive you
can call those numbers from the U.S. to check them out with the appropriate
country code.

Also don't forget an AC adapter conversion plug if you're using a PCMCIA card
as well as spare AA's. PCMCIA modems take alot of battery current. Me, I'd
forget it & use the sidecar.

Last become an expert with your Zaurus before you go as $ rates are big time
over there as well as local phone numbers. Learn here cheaply not there.

Good luck.

From Germany both e-mail and faxing work just like in the US with the
exception of the jack.

That's also a good tip from Jim Christian, as local calls do cost something,
at least in Ger. (about a di me a minute during the day)

I spend a lot of time in Paris for work. I also found those same busy times,
but I used two different numbers and could almost always get in to one of
them. I found 47.08.07.08 to be the "best number" and therefor my first
choice, but often if that one was busy I could get in to 47.89.39.40 on the
first try.

As far as the phone adaptors plugs, they are available in Paris at FNAC (38
FF) or BHV (21 FF). I think the Virgin Megastores also have them. Recently
(after I completed my collection) I saw that Radio Shack in the US has a kit
with phone adaptors for France, UK and Germany for $14.95.

I can't answer (i) or (ii) with confidence, although the answer to (i) should
be able to be found from within CompuServe itself ("GO PHONES") and the answer
to (ii) should be yes - although others could confirm better than I.

As far as (iii) is concerned, the French phone plugs are quite different to US
ones and you may well need an adaptor. While these should be available in
Paris, you could try Magellans (CompuServe 75713,2463) or TeleAdapt
(72623,706) who stock bits of this type in the US.

Good luck - and let us know how you go.

Hi lbader,

It's easy to use CIS in Paris. I've done it many times.

<<(i) Paris access number for CS;

The access number is: 47080708

<<(ii) can I just log on using the sidecar modem, as I do here

Yes, you can do exactly that.

<<(iii) do I need a special phone jack, or can I just replicate what I use
here?

What you need is a phone plug adapter. Bring you regular phone cable, then in
France you can buy the plug adapter. I bought it years ago in a Tandy (Radio
Shack) around the corner from Rue des Rossiers. But you should find them
anywhere for maybe 20 FF. Have fun :-)

Lani, hope this helps you out.
The phone number for C-Serve is 47 89 39 40
The sidecar will probably work fine
You'll need a phone adapter unless you're staying in a major hotel you'll need
an adapter or acoustic coupler (try Teleadapt (408) 370 5105)

Lbader,

Marcus is right, his instructions are right on. I returned from Europe about 2
weeks ago and used the same phone number even. The adapter is readily
available at the department stores in Paris.

If you get into a hotel that doesn't have phones with the adaptor that can be
unplugged, try going to one of their lobby phones and disconnect the curly
cord running from the base of the phone to the handset. Plug the cord into the
Zaurus. Even though it is smaller than the normal cord, it still seems to work
okay.

This method also allows you to connect if you need to get an outside dialtone
first before you dial into CompuServe. I will also warn you that Paris' number
was busy a lot of the time and it also had a lot of line noise in the hotel
where I stayed.

Hope this helps.

>> I will also warn you that Paris' number was busy a lot of the time and it

I was in Paris a couple times this year and was unsuccessful in logging on
from one hotel because the phone was hardwired into the wall and had a
high-frequency tone on it that had something to do with the PBX. It was so
bad that I couldn't even use my acoustic coupler. However, the second hotel
let me use the wall adapter but I did have slow response time.

As I was working there, I found out that if I logged on as soon as I got
up...about 5:30-6:00 am...I got through fine. Saturday afternoons were not
good, but Sunday mornings were fine.

Hey, it's a small price to pay for being in Paris. I'll get up at 5:00 am to
log on and then go out to my local "zinc" for croissants and coffee! But,
they don't half stare at you as you sit there answering your e-mail on your Z.

Cheers,
Leo

Many Paris hotels have fax machines that you can tap into if the office allows
you. I always call in advance asking about the telephone connections @ the
hotel. Many are trying to accomodate travelers who are internet correct.

Here's a few hints...

1. GO PHONES for the latest phone numbers.

2. Ask the same questions in the (GO) FRANCE forum as well as check their
library files. Remember the majority of this forum is located where you are
going. Do a web search with the words FRANCE & FRENCH, you should find pleanty
of stuff to help.

3. Call TeleAdapt @ 408-370-5105 for adapter questions & solutions. I hear
Radio Shack may have some also. Get a plug adapter for an AC adapter. I
recommend using your sidecar modem (all that's required). Hotel fax machines
usually have RJ-11 (what we use) telephone jacks if your hotel room doesn't
have one. Ask to use it.

4. Learn how to use the TERMINAL mode of your 5800 here before you go as CCZ
may not work. Check the library file SHARP.CIS.

5. Log on to France from your home here to see if everything works beforehand.
With the higher tel rates over there it may be cheaper to learn here.

6. Take two coiled cords so if one goes bad the other will work.

7. Take extra AA's.

8. Take your Zaurus books.

I doubt whether Word or Excel files can be transmitted to/fro a 5800 but maybe
someone else can show us both how. Outbound Word compatible RTF may work,
though, via the DOCUMENT ap.

There are no translators but you can create your own by using the OUTLINE or
DOCUMENTS aps & using the SEARCH function. Not to elegant but does work. If
you find one on a france.com web search or anything you find helpful please
post it to me for my ZFRANCE.TXT I'm keeping (to upload soon). Your input will
help other.

Good luck. --JHC

BTW don't forget to send me a message from France.

Hello Carol,

the numbers for Compuserve in France are the following:

in Paris:
   47 89 39 40

outside of Paris (use this one when in Angers):
   36 06 24 24

In your compuserve settings, you have to note the following:

     in Paris: network=CompuServe

     outside Paris: network=Transpac !!!!!

The phone connectors are not as in the USA. They have a special plug - only in
special phone stores you can get a plug in which you can plug in a Western
plug as used in the USA. So either you can get hold of a fax machine, unplug
it and use that cable to plug-in your ZR, or best

Take a set of screw drivers with you, prepare a phone cable at home - on one
side with a western which goes into your ZR, the other end, cut off the plug
and un-insulate the two center cables - once in Frace, open the wall-jack,
connect the two cables to the phone line.

if you have further questions, send e-mail to my account and I'll be glad to
help you.

--Viturin

p.s. Angers is a small, but nice and pittoresque town. Gave many concerts
there.
