I live in Germany and have been on-line with my Z1all over this country and in
Italy as well, by means of the sidecar modem, a Motorola PCMCIA card and a GSM
card connected to a GSM digital phone. France will be no problem. Ditto,
Slovenia, although you might have to dial out to the CompuServe node in Munich
to get on line from Slovenia, unless there is now a node there. That is easy
to check. You should have no problems. Buy an adaptor for your U.S. RJ11
phone jack in an electronic store. Be prepared to unplug hotel phones from
the wall or at the phone set (you won't find many hotels with data port
phones). Don't forget to enter the hotel's outside line access number
(usually 0 in Germany) in your dialing string. Also don't forget to GO PHONES
before you leave and store in your Z the CompuServe access numbers in the
countries and cities where you will be travelling. Saves fumbling around once
you get there. Try visiting the country forums and forum libraries for your
proposed countries in CompuServe. You will often find good info in those
forums about getting on line. The problem is not unique to Z users. I know
that is true of Italy. I used a file from the forum library there before
travelling to Italy.

Along with the other suggestions check into the TRAVEL forum as well as the
specific country forum like FRANCE. Ask in them how to get on Compuserve. Also
GO PHONES & then international & get the local numbers. Athough expensive you
can call those numbers from the U.S. to check them out with the appropriate
country code.

Also don't forget an AC adapter conversion plug if you're using a PCMCIA card
as well as spare AA's. PCMCIA modems take alot of battery current. Me, I'd
forget it & use the sidecar.

Last become an expert with your Zaurus before you go as $ rates are big time
over there as well as local phone numbers. Learn here cheaply not there.

Good luck.

I live in England and have used both a ZR-5000 and currently a ZR-5800 both
with 3 types of modems ... a normal external modem, A PCMCIA modem and the
Sharp Sidecar modem (CE-FM4).

I have succesfully and with no problem faxed & e-mailed to my hearts content.

I have not received faxes via any method on my Zaurii .... This is as yet not
possible.

In England we now have a local access phone number that works wherever you are
in England ... 0845 080 1000

If I can answer any more questions please don't hesitate to ask.

From Germany both e-mail and faxing work just like in the US with the
exception of the jack.

That's also a good tip from Jim Christian, as local calls do cost something,
at least in Ger. (about a di me a minute during the day)

I couldn't get the Z to fax from Rome and never figured out why...so if anyone

Maybe you didn't include the "X3" command in the init string for the modem
(don't wait for dial tone).

Hope this help

To all, (germany) Sueddeutsche Zeitung and FAZ from today are reporting that
CIS and Telecom will work together in future. From October on everybody will
be able to connect CIS with a 0190 local call number . That means one hour
connection costs $1Dollar. Using Internet will be quicker due to changing to
the IP Protocol with installing new nodes in Paris London and MUNIC.

Bruno,

The simplest way to regularly access CompuServe is to call Pygmy @
800-447-9469 and get the CompuServe software for the ZR5000, you will also
need a 2meg flash card.

The next approch is to connect using the terminal emmulation, you will have to
set the Zaurus for 7E1 while you connect, the as soon as the connection is
estaplished you need to tap on SETUP and change the settings to 8N1. This is
because your CompuServe account in Germany uses LATIN 1.

Give it a try, then let me know how you are doing.

BTW. Remember the Zaurus conference on this next Wednesday, it will be at 3pm
Eastern time OCT 2nd. Scott will be talking about the new Zaurus software
from RUPP, he will also give away several prizes... So if you need any more
software for your Zaurus, this is the conference to hang out for.

Hi Jeff,

SHIFT-3 produces the '#' sign on my Zaurus. I am in Germany, but have the
english version of the Zaurus 5700, baught it in Hong Kong.

I can type the '#' sign in front of the phone number to be dialled by the
compuserve software, but the '#' sign changes the dial setting automatically
from tone to pulse dialling.

I guess the '#' sign is used by the Zaurus (same as the Macintosh) as a
command-string to change from tone to pulse in the middle of the phone
number... How can I make the zaurus dial a '#' or a substitute?

Thank you for your help.

You didn't say which country you're in, so I don't know what set of symbols
your Zaurus is capable of. Have you checked to see if the # symbol is
available in the symbol list?

ignoring "-" when dialing) don't happen to me on my Zaurus. Either way I'll
