There have been several questions about using Zaurus with the GSM cellular
phone phone.

Herewidth I wish to clarify the cunfusing issues:

Standard telephone line data/fax modems transpose PC digital bits into the
audio tones, which are transparently transmitted over telephone line voice
circuits to the modems on another end of the circuit, which demodulate them
and feed as "DC" data bits into the PC.

Analogue cellular systems carry end-to-end voice communications between two
cellular phones or between a cellular phone and fixed telephone in the same
transparent way as landline telephone infrastructure (though at some point in
the network the analogue voice may be digitized, transferred in a digital form
and then reverted back to analogue). For this reason, the same data/fax modems
that are used for landline, can be connected to the voice inputs/outputs of
the analogue cellular phones.

GSM is a digital system. In a GSM cellular system, modem data tones are not
fed to the AF circuits of the cellular phone. The "modem" card is not actually
doing any modulation/demodulation in this case; it is acting more as a
data/fax protocol adapter. Data from this card are inserted as "DC" digital
bits into the digital GSM data stream according to a specific GSM data/fax
protocols, either in a "transparent" mode, at up to 9600 bps of user data
rate, or in a "non-transparent mode": error protected by the GSM Radio Link
Protocol (RLP) at max. 4800 bps user rate.

This is why the GSM modem card is not the same as the line modem card, though
physically it looks the same! Some cards on the market are "dual" mode and can
be used for the line as well as for the GSM.

Furthermore, hardware and software interfaces between GSM modem card and a GSM
phone vary from one phone manufacturer to other: they are proprietary and not
standardised. That's why there is a different GSM modem card and interface
cable for each handset brand. Some of the GSM modems, however, can be
downloaded with a software specific to a given brand. For example, Dr.
Neuhauss modem can be used with Siemens/Sony and Ericsson GSM phones after
relevant software downloading from the PC and use of the apropriate interface
cable. Dacom "Gold" card can do the same with a Panasonic , Alcatel and some
other phones.

Unfortunately, ZR does not support ANY modem PCMCIA card! So, though all GSM
modem cards can be used with a correcponding phone on any PC with a PCMCIA
slot, it is not sure they all are compatible with a ZR! It should be at a
SHARP interest to test them all and issue regularly updated lists, but in the
meantime, one has to take a risk himself !

I know that SHARP in Germany is selling a ZR5000 with an OEM Ericsson GSM
phone and (what I think is) a Dr. Neuhauss GSM modem PCMCIAcard.

So, for the guys who wish to buy a data/fax card in US, be aware that the
cards sold for use with a US analogue cellular phones, are NOT useable with a
GSM phone!

Hope the above info helps.

I'm not sure where you are, but if you are in GSM adopted country, the Nokia
DTP-2 is excellent (L250) used on Nokia 2110, or Panasonic (Psion Dacom) works
with G400 or G350. Ericsson make an 9600 card now that works with their
fantastic EH388.

If you need a dual mode (PSTM + GSM) then the Communicate Cellect 2 is great
for Motorola 8400 GSM and 14,400 PSTN and fax.....

Jim,

PMFJI,
I have seen adverts in Sharp magazines for a GSM card linked to Sharp's own
GSM phone and it should also work with the Panasonic G400 and G350 using a
Psion Dacom Gold modem upgraded for GSM capability.

The Motorola 8400 and 7500 should also work with Motorola GSM cards.

Jim,

I do now have a GSM phone (Panasonic G400) but do not ert have an appropriate
PC-Card.

I enquired about the cost of upgrading my Psion Dacom Gold 28k to add GSM
functionality (by the way this works with Zaurus).

Unfortunately it was from an earlier batch compared to those that can now be
upgraded.

So, as I have no desperate need, I am going to wait for prices to fall.

Kable

There are plenty of GSM + Z5800 users in Europe. It works perfectly (and
almost everywhere else in the world outside the USA where there is no GSM
network).

The info I had is that the European version of Zaurus would have a GSM support
built-in. I wish to know is this a case, what is included and what GSM services
are supported with this software ? How is it acceswsed/activated on the UK
ZR5800 ?

I am using my ZR with Dr Neuhauss Gipsy GSM PCMCIA card, driving Mitsubishi
MT20D handset and it works perfectly with ccz software, without any particular
modem setup, just an at&f initiation string (this message is being transmitted
over the GSM network). I can also send a fax over GSM with standard fax ZR
softwafre; so, I wander what are those particular GSM services that are
supposedly included in the GSM software, if it is built-in. If they permitt
sening/receiving SMS, how does it work (interface to the handset, under which
applicatoion...)?

As far as i could see on a German ZR-5800G the GSM software is basically a
tool to
send/receive SMS messages. You can type in the SMS (short message service)
mail on your Zaurus keyboard and they are sent via handy.

BTW: I tested the Dr. Neuhaus Fury Card Duo (28.8 analog + GSM) and found it's
not
working with CCZ or Fax. Reading your mail makes me happy because i urgently
need
a GSM-card that's working with my Z.

Thanks & regards

Daniel,

On April 30 you have adviced me of following:

>The UK ZR-5800 will have the GSM Driver built-in to the ROM. Anyone wishing
to add the GSM Driver to their non-UK Z can install it as an add-on in the
MORE area.<

I have bought a new ZR5800 in UK, and could not find the GSM driver. Will you
please tell me how to access this application and what it exactly can offer
within the GSM services?

I use a 5800 I bought in the USA with my Nokia 2110 GSM phone No problems.
Which features of GSM do you want it to support - just faxing and dial up
access then you should have no problems although the modems drain heaps of
power. If you want to support SMS then maybe it wont I'm not sure.

I believe the European version ships with GSM in it. Also, it is not called
"Zaurus".

Mery,
Thanks for the suggestion, but I do not find anything similar to the "CIS for
GSM" in the Zaurus library on the Compusefrve ZR forum. Are you refering to
this forum or to one of the Internet forums?

Hope you don't mind my inputs.
In New Zealand I have used both the US model & loc al ( like UK model) Zaurus
5000 & 5800 units over GSM.
The ZR5000 had a problem in faxing over GSM. Howevever it worked all right
with a Nokia 2110 Cell Phone for the GSMS.
Testing with both units of ZR5800 ( both USA & NZ) has been no problems at
all.
That is GSMS ( using German program from CIS Library) .
If you get hold of a English Version of the SMS Software for Zaurus please let
me know. Really need it - my German is not that good!

Hi Jim,
Thanks for compiling and sending all data on ZR/GSM, I have got all of those
already, but it still does not answer my basic question: what is the
difference (GSM software based) of the US ZR5800 and the UK version! I was
postponing the purchase of my Z2, waiting for the European version, which was
supposed to offer something different, but I do not find anything! One can
well use the US version of Z2, plug-in the GSM PCMCIA and connect via CCZ or
in terminal mode, withoiut any particular initiation string!

So, I just want to know what was the "GSM compatibility" claimed to have been
integrated into EU model, which the US model does not support?! Particularly,
if existing, how to access the extended AT command set specific to the GSM
services (by means of a menu, not as a manual entering of the commands in
terminal mode!)

Radi
