I will be in Israel later this year and wish to stay in touch with e-mail via
CompuServe. I will be using a PCMCIA modem with a Sharp Zaurus 5800 Personal
Digital Assistant (PDA), a fancy name for an organizer with telecom capability
and built-in CompuServe Software for e-mail and forum connectivity.

Is there anything more I need than the access number in Jerusalem 02-738917
and the israkav script (israkav.scr ) from forum's library to establish
connection to CIS. Does Israel use RJ-11 connectors to get into the phone
system or do I need some kind of adaptor or certain kind of modem. I am
currently using an ATT "Keep in Touch" model 3760 which works fine here in the
States.

Alison,
We are using both RJ-11 and British (New Bezeq) connectors. But most likely
you will not need to use any adapter.

To all interested,

My name is Eyal Zvi. I'm the manager of the Customer Service department in
Trendline, CompuServe agent in Israel. (The Hebrew name for Trendline is
Kav-Manche).

In response to frequent questions, following is all the information you need
in order to connect to CompuServe while staying in Israel, covering both
technical and administrative aspects.

The first chapter is for experts - it gives all the necessary information in a
few short sentences. If the brief version is not clear enough - please read
the other, more detailed, chapters.

(*** All phone numbers are listed at the end of this document ***).

1. Quick overview for experts and experienced users.

If you plan to use CompuServe very little in Israel (up to 2 hours a month),
it is best to just follow the technical instructions and remember that
communications surcharge is $8 per hour (counted on a per minute basis).

If you plan to use CompuServe a lot in Israel, or need an account for someone
else to use in Israel, it is best you contact Trendline and convert your
account to an Israeli account or open a new account through Trendline.

For your Israeli account, Trendline can provide you with communication
packages which provide rates by far lower than $8 an hour.

To actually get connected, you need your CIM software installed as usual. Then
do the following before arriving to Israel (or contact Trendline Technical
Support if in Israel):

GO WCIMTECH and download the latest ISRAKAV.SCR. Place this file in your
scripts directory (usually \CSERVE\SCRIPTS, or the CCLs folder on Macs).
Create a new Session Settings, type in one of the access phone numbers listed
below and select Israkav as your network.

2. Considerations when connecting to CompuServe in Israel.

Using CompuServe while staying in Israel is very much the same as using it
anywhere else. However, there are two differences which require some
attention: pricing and communications settings.

3. Pricing information.

CompuServe rates are probably well known to you and they apply when using
CompuServe in Israel. However, CompuServe Network, which lets you connect free
of charge to CompuServe within the USA, does not reach as far as Israel.

So Trendline, CompuServe agent in Israel, provides you with its own fast and
safe international link to CompuServe, called IsraKav, at a reasonable cost.

Basically, using IsraKav costs $8 per hour. If you have a CompuServe account
and plan to use CompuServe very little in Israel, this is all you need to know
about pricing, and you may skip on to the technical chapter.

However, if you plan to stay in Israel for long periods of time, or if you
plan to have a CompuServe account for a friend, relative or business partner
in Israel, it is best you contact Trendline and sign for one of our
"CompuServe Packages" which provide far lower rates.

In order to apply better communication rates to your account, you need either
to have it converted to an "Israeli account", or sign for a new account
through Trendline. Otherwise, Trendline does not have any influence on your
communications charges, and they are billed at $8 per hour directly to your
CompuServe account.

Once your account is converted, or you open a new account through Trendline,
the account is not billed for communications charges by CompuServe. Instead,
Trendline "counts the minutes" and applies one of its "Package" rates.

The "CompuServe Packages" start at $25 for a 5 hour package, which covers the
first 5 hours of communications. There are other packages which include more
communications hours (12, 20, 30, etc.) and provide better price per hour
ratio. If you use mail only, the 5 hour package should be enough. More
intensive usage of CompuServe calls for a different package - you know your
needs best.

Once signed up with Trendline, your account will be billed according to the
terms of the communications package you select, and all further contacts with
CompuServe are taken care of through Trendline.

4. Technical preparations.

If you plan to use a mobile computer with CompuServe software installed, while
in Israel, it is best to make some preparations before arriving to Israel.

If you prefer to have your account converted to an Israeli account or if you
plan to sign for a new account through Trendline, no preparation is needed -
you will get everything you need from Trendline.

A. Preparing a laptop computer for use in Israel.

Your CompuServe software should be installed and running properly off the
laptop. Once done, you will need to get the latest network script for use in
Israel - ISRAKAV.SCR. This is done by GOing to WCIMTECH forum, and
downloading the file named ISRAKAV.SCR to your scripts directory (usually this
is \CSERVE\SCRIPTS, or CCLs folder on Macs). Don't mind overwriting the older
version.

Then, open the Session Settings window and push the New button. This will
prompt you for a name of a new settings - try something like "CIS - Israel".
Then, change the phone access number to one of the numbers listed below, and
change the Network selection to "Israkav".

Press OK to save the settings, then re-open the Session Settings window and
switch back to your normal settings. The "Israeli" settings can and should be
used only in Israel, so until you get to Israel stick to the original
settings.

B. Setting up CompuServe software in Israel.

If you start a new account in Israel, you will get full instructions, a
password sheet and the latest version of CompuServe software on 3.5 inch
floppies (DOS, Windows, OS/2 and Mac versions are all available).

If you did not have the opportunity to prepare, then Trendline Technical
Support is there to instruct and send you whatever material is necessary to
get you up and running.
Instructions are pretty much the same as if done before arriving, only you may
not be able to connect to CompuServe to retrieve the latest ISRAKAV.SCR
scripts, so you will have to get it from Trendline by mail or by downloading
it from our BBS.

for the time being, contacting Trendline from outside Israel should be
directed to me (Eyal Zvi - 102354,2133) by CompuServe Mail only. I will
dispatch letters to appropriate departments.

I hope this document is of interest and use. Feel free to ask for
clarifications so I can produce better versions of the document... and have a
good stay in Israel!

Eyal.
