The English Bulldog Spike

Spike's real name is nothing more than Spike. He is a so called "throwback" English Bulldog, a Bulldog out of modern show-lines who looks more like the Bulldogs of old times.
Spike was purchased solely for a pet.His owner, Sharon Maguire, knew nothing about pure breeds at that time, as she always have had muts before him.
Spike's mother is "Lady March"
Spike's father is "Londonderry Hansome Fella"
Sharon tells with her own words the rest of the story about Spike.

Spike is my one year old, 60 pound English Bulldog.
Spike barks at his shadow and reflection in the glass door, thinks the lawn mower, chain saw and the wood chipper are monsters that needs to be attacked, try's to eat the light reflecting of of my watch while I am at my desk, loves our cat, does not care too much for strange dogs and loves all people. He thinks he is a lap dog and is always trying to climb on someone's lap and if he can not get away with that, he is leaning against someone's leg. He is away giving you his slobby bone to hold while he chews it.
Spikes best friend is my 10-year-old husky named Puppy. The two of them play all the time. Spike protects Puppy, there where a few instances where a dog tried to attack Puppy and Spike intervened. Spike does not attack the other dogs he simply growls enough to let the other dog know he means business and then he keeps himself in-between the two dogs. The neighbor's German shepherd, who liked to seek Puppy out and try to attack him, seems to have given up since we have gotten Spike. Now he stands at a short distance watching them play. Spike and Puppy just ignore him. Sometimes I think the shepherd wants to join in on Spike and Puppy's backyard play.

Spike loves the stream on a hot summer day. He and "Puppy", cool off quickly after a dip in the water. This particular day was not a hot summer day, it was a cold winter day, about 35 degrees and sunny. Spike and Puppy were out playing in the back yard as usual. I walked out and called the dogs to come back inside. Puppy was the only one that came back. I started calling Spike. Then I heard this awful noise; it sounded like a dying animal, nothing like a noise my Spiky would make. I called him again and when he didnt come I said to Puppy, "Puppy, where did he go, wheres Spike, where is he." Puppy ran down to the stream, looked straight down the 3 foot bank and barked a distressed bark I had never heard from him before. I walked down the hill to the bank to see what puppy was barking at. I didnt see anything until I got right up to the edge of the bank. When I looked down I saw Spike. He was all muddy. The back half of him was under water. A board that had floated down stream and was wedged against the bank was on top of his back. His front paws were on the side of the bank as if he was trying to get out. He was one sorry sight. I said "hold on buddy Ill get you out". I started to climb down the bank. I wasnt sure how I was going to get him out. The only choices that I could see were to step on that board, or get in the water myself. I stepped lightly on the board; it didnt seem to be putting any pressure on him. I grabbed a hold of his collar and pulled. At that same instant spike tried with all of his might to climb the bank. He made it. Even puppy was happy. The two of them ran around the yard jumping on each other, while Spike shook the water and the tramatic incident off.
Spike was one muddy mess. My once white dog was now brown. I brought him inside and gave him a nice warm bath. He was happy to be home.

If you ever want to see Spike pounce around the house like a frisky little kitten, just get out the laser pointer! Spike chases that little red dot with all of his might never giving up! If the dot goes down the steps and back up again around the chair and back down the steps, so does Spike. If I didn't know any better, I would swear that the little red dot moving across the floor was very much alive. He really thinks he is going to catch it this time!
Spike tries to eat the little red dot! The little red dot always ends under our living room recliner. Spike thinks it lives there! If I say to him, "Where did it go, Spike?" he always runs to the chair and waits for it to come out and play.

Spikes just loves kids. He and my 4-year-old are like two peas in a pod. They are constantly at play. She calls him Buddy. When they are outside together he follows her where ever she goes. Kind of like a personal body guard. There are times when I am calling Spike and he is not coming, so I tell her to call him. She yells "Buddy, come here my Bud Boy" and he comes running as fast as he can. Honestly I wouldn't want to be the stranger that attempts to get in between the two of them.
Speaking of a personal bodyguard, get this...
Just this past holiday weekend my daughter was out playing by the road. A man out taking his morning stroll was walking by. Spike was off in the yard just doing his own thing. He saw the guy but was just ignoring him. The guy stopped and started to talk to my daughter, when all of a sudden this 59 pound mass of muscle came snarling and growling to the rescue. Staying close to her, he put himself in between my daughter and this dangerous man trying to talk to her. My husband, who was down in the yard, tried to call spike away, but he would not budge from his post. The guy decided she was not worth the conversation and went on his way. Of course there was no real danger. The guy was just being friendly. But as far as spike was concerned there was a need to guard. My daughter later came inside with a big smile on her face and said to me, "Spike was protecting me." Than she gave her Bud Boy a big hug.

Sharon Maguire have her own pages, several of them dedicated to Spike. Click on the picture below to visit Sharon's site.

Do YOU want to nominate a Molosser for Dog of the Month? It does not have to be a dog who have achieved alot at shows, other reasons count as much to be Dog of the Month.
